Junior Serafina Maulupe Scores Career High 25 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Junior Serafina Maulupe scored a career-high 25 points, including a career-best 11 free throws, but the CSUN women's basketball team (8-11, 1-4 Big West) lost 70-63 to Cal Poly Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference game at The Matadome. Sophomore Channon Fluker added her 11th double-double of the season, but the Matadors could not overcome a seven-point halftime deficit in losing their fifth-straight game to Cal Poly and fourth straight overall.Â
Down 33-26 after 20 minutes of action, the Matadors staged rallies in both the third and fourth quarters that came up just short. In the third, a lay-up from Hayley Tanabe cut the lead to 36-34 as CSUN opened the half on an 8-3 run. However, Cal Poly responded with a 7-0 run of its own to go back ahead 43-34 and the deficit remained seven at the end of the third (47-40).Â
In the fourth, Maulupe nearly willed the Matadors all the way back with eight-straight points to open the frame. Eliza Matthews then added an offensive rebound and basket and the scored was 50-49. The Mustangs answered with five-straight points and after Fluker cut the deficit to 57-55, Cal Poly out-scored CSUN 13-8 the rest of the game.Â
Maulupe finished 6-of-11 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range to go with an 11-of-15 clip from the charity stripe. She added two rebounds, assists and steals in the defeat and is averaging 12.3 points per game.Â
Fluker finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of work. She tied a career high with five blocked shots in the game and is averaging 15.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.Â
Tanabe finished with six points and was one of four Matadors with two assists in the game.Â
CSUN shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the field, but just 3-of-10 (30 percent) from downtown. The Matadors also went 18-of-28 (64.3 percent) from the free throw line. Cal Poly finished at 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field and 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from downtown while adding an 83.3 percent rate (20-of-24) from the free throw line.Â
The Matadors committed 19 turnovers that resulted in 18 points for Cal Poly and the Mustangs finished with 12 steals.Â
CSUN returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 25 with a home contest against UC Santa Barbara. Tip off between the Matadors and Gauchos is slated for 7 p.m.Â
