SIMI VALLEY, CA - An opening round 289 had the CSUN men's golf team in the top three before a second round 296 dropped the Matadors to sixth after 36 holes of the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
CSUN was just 10 shots behind team-leading UC Santa Barbara after round one but the Matadors could not replicate that total and slipped out of the top five. The defending champion Gauchos fired team rounds of 279-286 and hold a two-shot lead over a red-hot Utah State squad heading into Tuesday's final round.
"We're a talented team but we're just having trouble finding the consistency that we need," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We just making too many poor decisions, playing aggressive when we shouldn't and those things add up at the end of the day. We shouldn't be in the middle of the pack at our own tournament, but I think we're capable of putting together a good final round tomorrow."
Individually, senior Felix Mory is the Matador leader through two rounds as he fired rounds of 70-71 and is currently tied for seventh at three-under 141. Mory was one-under after nine holes in round one and added a pair of birdies on the back nine on his way to a two-under round of 70 in the morning.Â
He was two under on the front nine in the afternoon round but had three bogeys and a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish at one-under for the round and three-under for the day.
"Felix was a little frustrated because he felt like he should have been lower than three-under but we'll expect a good round from him tomorrow," added Bracken.
CSUN is competing two teams at this years Cullum Invitational with Michael Zhang and Daniel Taplin firmly in the middle of the pack for the "A" team. Zhang fired rounds of 72-74 and is tied for 32nd at two-over 146. Taplin, making his Matador debut, is one shot behind Zhang in a tie for 34th at three-over 147 (74-73).
Trym Falch had a good opening round with a one-over 73 before struggling in round two with a seven-over 79. Falch is tied for 64th at eight-over 152 followed by Gabriel Barnes who is tied for 71st at 10-over 154 following rounds of 76-78.
CSUN's Red team, competing as individuals, included Joey Varnam who is tied for 58th at seven-over 151 (75-76). A trio of Matadors are tied for 78th as Tomas Skajem (83-73), Jason McGuinness and Sevian Frangipane (83-73) are all knotted at 12-over 156. Luis Calderon is tied for 84th at 15-over 159 (79-80).
The final round gets underway Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
