SIMI VALLEY, CA - Felix Mory tied for third place but the CSUN men's golf struggled for the second straight round, dropping from sixth to 10th at the conclusion of the 22nd annual Bill Cullum Invitational Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
After an opening round 289 tied them for third, the Matadors dropped seven shots in round two to slip to sixth before posting a final round 298 to drop to 10th at 19-over 883. Utah State (848) overcame defending champions UC Santa Barbara (850) to win the team title by two shots to claim its first Cullum title.Â
"When you're hosting your own tournament you've got to play better than we did today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "The positive is that we still have one tournament remaining in the fall. We have the talent to compete but some things certainly need to change. We've got to be committed to be better."
Mory was one of the bright spots for the Matadors in the final round as he fired a three-under 69 to finish the tournament at six-under 210. The CSUN senior was three-under through 12 holes on Tuesday after a birdie on the 15th hole. Pars over his final six holes kept him at three-under for the day and six-under for the tournament.
The top 10 finish was Mory's second in three fall tournaments in addition to a top 20 showing at Fresno State's NIck Watney Invitational.
"Felix was really our only consistent player in this tournament," said Bracken. "He expects to play well, that's his mindset and the other guys need to learn from that. They work just as hard but they need to learn how to manage their game better."Â
The rest of the Matador squad didn't fare as well on Tuesday as Michael Zhang had one birdie and five bogeys in a final round 75 which dropped him from 32nd to 39th at five-over 221. After posting rounds of 76 and 78 on Monday, Gabriel Barnes had CSUN's second-best round on Tuesday with an even-par 72 which moved him into a tie for 56th at 10-over 226.
Joey Varnam, competing as an individual, tied for 62nd at 12-over 228 (75-76-77), one shot better than Daniel Taplin who finished tied for 66th at 13-over 229. Taplin carded a final round 82 after rounds of 74-73 on Monday.
Individuals Jason McGuinness tied for 71st at 15-over 231 (76-80-75), Tomas Skajem finished tied for 75th at 16-over 232 (83-73-76) and Sevian Frangipane was 79th at 18-over 234 (83-73-78). Trym Falch rounded out the CSUN lineup in 80th place at 19-over 235 (73-79-83) and CSUN's last individual Luis Calderon tied for 86th at 24-over 240 (79-80-81).Â
In addition to Utah State's team championship, Cal State Fullerton's Derek Castillo tied the tournament record with a three round score of 14-under 202 to claim individual medalist honors.
