NORTHRIDGE, CA - Felix Mory is 34th at even par 72 and the CSUN men's golf team is tied for 16th after the opening round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Thursday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
CSUN posted a team round of seven-over 295 and is tied for 16th with a pair of other teams. Santa Clara (-9, 279) holds the round one lead while the Matadors are just eight strokes out of the top 10.
Mory had consecutive bogeys at No. 17 and No. 18 and was one over after nine holes before posting three birdies in finishing one-under on his final nine holes. At even-par 72, the CSUN senior is 34th out of 112 players in the field.
Sophomore Michael Zhang matched Mory with six birdies in round one but a double bogey and triple bogey dropped him into a tie for 62nd at two-over 74. Gabriel Barnes is also tied for 62nd after posting a pair of birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys.
Daniel Taplin got off to a good start, finishing his first nine holes at two-under. But a five-over back nine left him tied for 77th at three-over 75. Sevian Frangipane and Joey Varnam, both competing as individuals, are currently tied for 86th at four-over 76. Jason McGuinness, CSUN's fifth player, is currently 111th at 15-over 87.Â
"The conditions were good today and a couple of the guys think they should have scored better," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We have to look at where we are in the field but if we can put together a good round tomorrow we can put ourselves back in the mix. Hopefully we can get some guys under par."
The CSUN individuals tee off the second round Friday beginning at 8 am while the rest of the squad tees off beginnning at 9:20 a.m.
