FRESNO, CA - After an opening round 299, the CSUN men's golf team struggled to a second 308 and is 15th through 36 holes at the Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Golf Course.
The Matadors were tied for 11th after carding a team total of 299 in the first round but could not get much going in the afternoon round and slipped four spots on the leader board following a round of 308.
"The bottom line was we executed poorly again today," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We might have a little lack of confidence right now but we have a new day tomorrow and I told the team that we need to focus and get out of here with one decent round."
Felix Mory looked to build on his fifth place finish at the season-opening Colorado Invitational, but struggled on his first hole in each round Monday and is tied for 38th.
The CSUNÂ senior had a double bogey five on No. 13 in round one before getting back to three-over 74. Mory matched his round one total with two birdies in the second round as he finished at four-over 75 for the round and seven-over 149 for the day.
Sophomore Michael Zhang also had four birdies on Monday in posting consecutive rounds of 75. Zhang is currently tied for 44th at eight-over 150. Junior Joey Varnam was even through eight holes in round one before finishing four-over on his remaining 10 holes. He then struggled to a second round 81 and is currently tied for 74th at 14-over 156.
Making his CSUN debut, Jason McGuinness is tied for 74th at 14-over 156 after rounds of 79-77 and Tomas Skajem is tied for 87th at 17-over 159 after posting scores of 75-84.
BYU's Peter Kuest leads the individual competition with a two round score of five-under 137 while Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's share the team lead at four-under 576.
CSUN tees off the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
