FRESNO, CA - The CSUN men's golf team put together its best round of the tournament Tuesday carding a final round 294 to move into the top 10 at Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Golf Course.
Nearly every Matador player moved on Tuesday including senior Felix Mory who finished in the top 20.
Mory, who opened the day tied for 38th, fired an even-par 71 on Tuesday to move up into a tie for 19th. The CSUNÂ senior was two-under on the front nine which included five birdies before finishing two-over on the back nine.
The top 20 finish was the fourth of Mory's Matador career to go with 11 top 10 finishes.Â
"Today was definitely a much needed positive for everybody," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We got off to a good start, we needed the confidence boost and it was something I wanted to see out of the guys. Moving forward hopefully we'll continue the momentum and play well at our event in two weeks."
After posting consecutive rounds of 75 on Monday, Michael Zhang finished with a six-over 77 to finish in a tie for 48th at 14-over 227. Junior Joey Varnam posted his best round of the season Tuesday with a one-over 72. Varnam was one-under through 10 holes and was still even before a bogey five on his 17th hole dropped him to one-over. The junior ultimately jumped 20 spots into a tie for 54th at 15-over 228.
Jason McGuinness completed his first CSUN tournament at 17-over 230 which was good for 60th place. McGuinness carded a final round three-over 74 to move up from 74th into a tie for 60th. Tomas Skajem rounded out the Matador scorers with a round of 82 to finish tied for 90th at 28-over 241.
BYU (+13, 865) led from start to finish to win the team title while the Cougars' Peter Kuest carded a final round 73 to win by three shots at three-under 210.
CSUNÂ is back on the course Oct. 16-17 as the Matadors host the annual Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
