IRVINE, Calif.—Emmanuel Usen Jr. scored twice to lead CSUN to a 4-1 victory over UC Irvine in Big West Conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Anteater Stadium in Irvine.
Â
The Matadors struck in the sixth minute. Michael Flores sent a low ball across the right wing, where Usen Jr. leaped and headed in his seventh goal of the season inside the right post.
Â
Samuel Dadzie nearly put the Matadors up 2-0 in the 18th minute. CSUN fouled, setting up an indirect kick that Dadzie headed on goal where Alex Waldron made the save. UCI recorded two shots and two corner kicks over the next four minutes as the Matadors withstood the spurt.
Â
The Anteaters continued to press the action, earning a pair of shots that went high and to the left of Henrik Regitnig in the CSUN goal. UC Irvine also tallied a corner kick as well to bring their first half total to five. A Dadzie header off a Julio Rubio corner with under three minutes to play in the first half was wide of the UCI net. The ball went off an Anteater defender, resulting in a second Rubio corner. UC Irvine would clear the corner as the Matadors took the lead into the halftime break.
Â
UCI came out aggressively in the second half, taking two shots and earning a corner in the first 1:33. CSUN regain the possession with Rubio taking a corner kick in the 50th. Rubio's attempt was sent into the box where Darion Mealing took a touch, but the ball was too far out and rolled away.
Â
Usen Jr. scored his second of the match at the 71:36 mark. Usen Jr. took a Daniel Trejo pass and sent a curling attempt over the far UCI post. Waldron made a save on a Flores attempt in the 76th minute to keep the CSUN advantage at two.
Â
The Anteaters' comeback hopes took a blow in the 77th when Christian Carrillo was sent off with a red card. The Matadors took advantage as Trejo scored his seventh goal of the year in the 80th. Trejo drove midfield, cut to the center, and scored from 20 yards out. Freshman Davis Moreno-Jaime scored his first goal of the season at 83:25 when finished off a Flores feed in the box. UC Irvine got on the board with 1:37 remaining as Luis Leon scored his second goal of the season. Erick Gallinar was credited with the assist on the play.
Â
"We played very well tonight," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We got the early goal and were able to survive the UCI attack in the first half and we were able to make some adjustments in the second half. Danny and Emmanuel are excellent players who made some plays tonight."
Â
The Matadors improve to 3-0-1 against Big West South Division foes this season and are now 9-6-2 overall, 4-2-2 in league play. UC Irvine falls to 7-7-3, 2-4-2. CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton (8-6-3, 3-3-2 Big West) Wednesday night. The Matadors lead the South with 14 points. The Titans are in second place with 11. Including the tie earlier this season between the two clubs earlier this season, CSUN and Cal State Fullerton have played four consecutive double overtime matches.
Â
"Wednesday's game will determine the South leader," Davila said. "We have played four straight double overtime matches against them so you know it will be a good game."
Â
The CSUN senior class will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. start. Coverage will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
