Sophomore Channon Fluker Sets School Single-Season Rebounding Record
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Sophomore Channon Fluker finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds to set the school record for single-season rebounds as the CSUN women's basketball team (14-11, 7-4) defeated UC Irvine 85-77 Thursday night in a Big West Conference game at The Matadome. Junior Serafina Maulupe added 19 points and five 3-pointers, eclipsing 100 treys for her CSUN career, and fellow junior Tessa Boagni came off the bench to post a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) as the Matadors held off a pesky Anteater squad.Â
Fluker grabbed her sixth rebound midway through the first half to give her 295 for the season at the time, taking the school record from Pam Spencer who had 294 rebounds in the 1979-80 season. Fluker finished with 14 rebounds in the game to give her 303 for the year and an average of 12.1 per game. She finished 10-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe to post her league-leading 17th double-double of the season.Â
A transfer from Virginia Tech, Maulupe became just the ninth player in program history to reach 100 career 3-pointers. She tied a career high with five 3-pointers and now has a team-high 66 on the season and 103 in her Matador career. Maulupe added four assists, three rebounds and a block in 39 minutes of work. She joined teammate Emily Cole, who hit her 100th career 3-pointer in a CSUN win at Weber State in December, in reaching the century mark this season.Â
Boagni had a strong game for the Matadors, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in 23 minutes. The double-double was her third of the season and seven of her 11 rebounds came on the offensive glass.Â
The Matadors got off to a good start, jumping out to a 12-7 lead in the first quarter. UC Irvine responded with a 13-3 run to end the period and take a 20-16 lead after 10 minutes of action. In the second, the Anteaters built the lead up eight (30-22) with 5:34 to play in the half. CSUN answered with its own run, getting a lay-up from Boagni with less than a minute to play to tie the game at the half.Â
The second half saw the teams trade baskets and CSUN saw its lead evaporate as UCI tied the scored with 4:04 to play in the third quarter. From there, Maulupe knocked down a 3-pointer and Cole knocked down three critical free throws to give CSUN some breathing room.Â
The Matadors took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter, but UC Irvine continued to stay in the game. The Anteaters cut the deficit to three two times in the fourth, the second time coming with 2:19 to play. Fluker answered with six-straight points to build the lead back to nine and UCI would get no closer than six the rest of the way.Â
Freshman Hayley Tanabe added eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes off the bench. Cole finished with six points while Eliza Matthews added eight.Â
CSUN posted 25 offensive rebounds and finished with a 51-22 advantage on the glass. The Matadors scored 32 second-chance points and had 30 points in the paint. As a team, CSUN shot 26-of-63 from the field and 26-of-36 from the free throw line. UCI shot 28-of-56 from the field and 13-of-20 from the free throw line.Â
The Matadors take their six-game winning streak on the road when they travel to Honolulu to face Hawai'i on Feb. 18. Tip off is set for 9 p.m. (PT) // 7 p.m. (HT) from the Stan Sheriff Center.Â
