Channon Fluker Leads Matadors with 17 Points
FULLERTON, Calif. --- Four Matadors scored in double-figures led by Channon Fluker's 17 points as the CSUN women's basketball team (16-11, 9-4 Big West) defeated Cal State Fullerton 71-54 Thursday night at Titan Gym. Tessa Boagni scored 14 off the bench, Hayley Tanabe added 12 points on four 3-pointers and Serafina Maulupe scored 10 as the Matadors won their eighth-straight Big West game.
CSUN led wire-to-wire in recording its 13th-straight win over the Titans. Fluker had nine points and four blocks in the first period as the Matadors jumped out to 23-9 lead after 10 minutes. Foul trouble sent Fluker to the bench in the second, but Boagni had six points in the period to keep CSUN ahead 36-19 at halftime.
In the second half, Tanabe connected on pair of 3-pointers and forced a Titan timeout early in the third period. She added a third 3-pointer in the frame and CSUN led 60-31 after 30 minutes of work. In the fourth, the CSUN reserves saw the majority of time and Jordan Smith canned a 3-pointer to conclude's CSUN's offensive night.
Fluker led CSUN with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. With 197 field goals on the season, she has set a new program Division I record. She added a career-high seven assists, tied a career high with seven blocks and grabbed seven rebounds in 24 minutes of work.
Boagni had an efficient night off the bench, shooting 7-of-10 from the field. She added four rebounds in 17 minutes of work. Tanabe was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown and added four rebounds and three assists. Maulupe was 4-of-11 with two 3-pointers to give her 71 for the season, the third-most in school history for a single season.
Freshman Eliza Matthews led CSUN with eight rebounds and added six points and a career-high four assists. The Matadors finished with a 46-27 advantage in rebounds and dished out a season-high 25 assists in the win, one helper shy of matching the school record. As a team, CSUN shot 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) from the field and 8-of-20 (40 percent) from 3-point range.
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, Feb 25 when it hosts UC Riverside. Tip off between the Matadors and Highlanders is slated for 4 p.m. from The Matadome.
