Sophomore Channon Fluker Leads CSUN with 22 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Sophomore Channon Fluker scored a team-high 22 points to help lift the CSUN women's basketball team (17-11, 10-4 Big West) to a 79-70 victory over UC Riverside Saturday afternoon at The Matadome. Junior Serafina Maulupe added 18 points and Hayley Tanabe finished with six points, seven assists and seven rebounds as the Matadors won their ninth-straight Big West Conference game.Â
Facing a spirited Highlander team, CSUN needed all 40 minutes to put the Highlanders away. Leading 70-60 in the fourth period, the Highlanders cut the lead in half with 3:29 left to play. Maulupe responded with a 3-pointer and CSUN knocked down its free throws to seal the victory.Â
Fluker enjoyed another solid game for CSUN, finishing 10-of-16 from the field to go with nine rebounds. She added one assist, one block and one steal in 33 minutes of work and is averaging 17.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game for the season.Â
Maulupe connected on four 3-pointers during the game to give her 75 on the season, tying for the second-most in program history for a season. She finished 6-of-13 from the floor and added two assists and two steals in 32 minutes of work. She is averaging 13.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for the season.Â
CSUN struggled out of the gate, making just one of its first nine field goal attempts. Once the nerves faded, CSUN closed the frame on a 10-2 run that was punctuated by a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Cheyenne Allen. In the second period, UCR fought back and out-scored the Matadors 14-11 to cut the halftime deficit to 36-31 in CSUN's favor.Â
After halftime, CSUN came out much sharper on the offensive end and forced a quick timeout from the Highlanders. Emily Cole hit her third 3-pointer of the game midway through the period to give CSUN a 13-point lead. UCR fought back and closed to within eight at the end of 30 minutes.Â
Tanabe had a solid all-around game, tying a season high in both assists and rebounds. She was 1-of-1 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Allen added eight points and three assists and Eliza Matthews pulled down nine rebounds to go with eight points and a block.Â
CSUN shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the field and 50 percent (8-of-16) from 3-point range. The Matadors held a 39-26 rebounding advantage and scored 32 points in the paint and 13 second-chance points.Â
Winners of nine-straight conference games, the Matadors close out the league slate with a pair of games next week. On Thursday, Mar. 1, the Matadors travel to Long Beach State for a 7 p.m. game at The Walter Pyramid. Two days later, CSUN hosts UC Davis at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The Matadors will honor both Emily Cole and Katelin King in a post-game ceremony.Â
