Channon Fluker Sets Field Goal Record in Defeat
LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Channon Fluker broke a 35-year old school record for field goals in a season, but the CSUN women's basketball team (17-12, 10-5 Big West) fell to Long Beach State 63-60 Thursday evening in a Big West Conference contest at The Walter Pyramid. Fluker posted her 18th double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 21 rebounds, but a fourth quarter run pushed the 49ers past the Matadors to snap their nine-game winning streak.Â
Leading by two after 30 minutes of work, the Matadors were whistled for four fouls less than three minutes into the fourth period. Long Beach State took advantage of the whistles and used a 12-0 run to go from trailing 47-45 to leading 57-47. The Matadors fought back and closed to within four points (60-56) with less than a minute to play.Â
CSUN continued to claw back and fight for overtime. Emily Cole scored a lay-up to cut the lead to three (63-60) and she then forced a LBSU turnover with less than a second to play. Unfortunately, Cole's 3-pointer sailed wide at the buzzer.Â
Fluker's fifth field goal of the night, which came late in the third period, broke Patricia De La Riva's record of 211 field goals from the 1981-82 season. She finished 5-of-14f from the field and 5-of-9 from the free throw line and had 11 offensive rebounds and two blocks.Â
The loss sets the Matadors as the third seed in the upcoming Big West Tournament. They will play on Wednesday, Mar. 8 at the Walter Pyramid against a still to be determined opponent.Â
Serafina Maulupe led CSUN in scoring with 16 points, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to give her 77 for the season. She added seven rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes of action. Tessa Boagni added 11 points off the bench for the Matadors while Cole finished with eight points and five rebounds.Â
The Matadors got off to a solid start, building a 15-10 lead at the end of the first period behind six points from Boagni. In the second, the 49ers clawed back and took a brief lead before Boagni made a lay-up before the buzzer to put CSUN ahead two points.Â
Fluker scored nine points in the third period and the Matadors stayed ahead after free throws from Boagni and Hayley Tanabe.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field and 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range. The Matadors committed 24 turnovers that resulted in 29 points for the 49ers. Long Beach finished with just nine turnovers and shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field.Â
CSUN closes out the regular season with a 2 p.m. match-up against UC Davis on Saturday, Mar. 4. After the game, the Matadors will honor Cole and Katelin King in a Senior Day ceremony.Â
