Channon Fluker Posts 24 Points and 15 Rebounds in Defeat
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (17-13, 10-6 Big West) lost 63-55 to UC Davis in both teams' Big West Conference finale Saturday afternoon at The Matadome. Sophomore Channon Fluker finished with a team-high 24 points and 15 rebounds, but the Aggies shot the ball well down the stretch to hold off the Matadors.Â
With their seeding already determined for the upcoming Big West Tournament, the Matadors spent most of Saturday fighting their way back against the Aggies. Trailing by one (41-40) after 30 minutes of work, the Matadors regained the lead briefly moments into the fourth period on a lay-up from Fluker.
After UCD built the advantage back to five points, CSUN rallied to tie the game at 51-51 with less than five minutes to play. The Aggies canned a 3-pointer on their next possession and CSUN would get no closer than that the rest of way as UC Davis knocked down its free throws.Â
With the 24 points, Fluker became just the fourth player in program history to surpass 500 points for a season. She currently has 521 points on the season, which ranks fourth in program history and is 24 points shy of establishing a new school record. She added eight offensive rebounds and two blocks in the loss and was 10-of-23 from the field. She ended the regular season averaging 17.4 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game, leading the Big West in all three categories.Â
Serafina Maulupe added 10 points for CSUN and two 3-pointers in 38 minutes. She now has 79 on the season and needs five more to establish a new single-season school record. Tessa Boagni came off the bench to finish with nine points and six rebounds while Eliza Matthews added eight points and seven rebounds.Â
In the first half, CSUN took a narrow 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter as Fluker made a basket moments before the buzzer. In the second quarter, CSUN shot just 20 percent (4-of-20) from the field and UCD responded with a 15-point frame to take a 29-25 lead at halftime.Â
As a team, CSUN finished at 33.3 percent (23-of-69) shooting from the field and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range. UC Davis shot 39.7 percent from the field (23-of-58) and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point range. The Matadors held a 46-38 advantage in rebounds and scored 34 points in the paint.Â
After the contest, CSUN honored two managers and seniors Katelin King and Emily Cole for their work and dedication to the CSUN women's basketball program over the past four years.Â
CSUN will play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 8 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, CAÂ in the second round of the Big West Tournament. The Matadors' opponent will not be determined until the night before during the opening round of the event.
