CSUN Kicks off Road Trip at Washington State

NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Baseball (11-10) hits the road for its final non-conference weekend series. The Matadors will face Washington State on Friday at 4 p.m. to begin a four-game set. The series will continue on Saturday and Sunday with both games set to start at 2 p.m. CSUN concludes it stay in Pullman, WA on Monday with the series finale slated for 12 p.m. Live stats and a live stream through Pac-12.org will be available for each game in the series.Â
The four-game series with the Cougars officially kicks off CSUN's longest road trip of the season. The Matadors were slated to start an eight-game trip on Tuesday at Loyola Marymount, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather and was rescheduled for Tuesday, April 18 at 6 p.m. Following the weekend series with the Cougars, the Matadors will head to UC Davis for the start of Big West play from March 31-April 2.Â
The Matadors look to get back to their winning ways after dropping three of four games to Saint Mary's last weekend at Matador Field. CSUN won in walk-off fashion in the opener as Justin Toerner hit an RBI single to defeat the Gaels 5-4 on Friday. Saint Mary's took both games in a Saturday doubleheader, posting a 10-0 win in game one followed by a 5-4 win in 10 innings in the afternoon contest. In the series finale on Sunday, Saint Mary's won a pitcher's duel, 2-1, to claim the series.Â
Albee Weiss drove in five runs in the series with the Gaels including a game-tying two-run home run in the eighth inning on Friday. Fred Smith also picked up the load offensively in the series, totaling four hits with a double, two walks and a stolen base. Right hander Andrew Weston tossed a career-best 8.1 innings, allowing four runs while fellow right hander Tei Vanderford hurled eight quality innings and surrendered three runs.Â
Heading into the weekend, Weiss is tied with UC Irvine's Keston Hiura for the conference lead in home runs (5) and RBI (20) while he is fifth in slugging percentage (.558) to go along with a .286 batting average and four doubles. Leading the team in batting, Alvaro Rubalcaba is hitting .327 at the plate with three home runs, 10 RBI, 10 walks and 11 runs scored. Another key run producer in the lineup, Kevin Riley leads the team in runs scored (16) and doubles (6) while he is second in RBI (14), home runs 4) and batting average (.289).Â
Taking the hill on Friday, Weston (2-2) is posting an even 3.00 ERA along with 24 strikeouts in 33.0 innings of work. Vanderford will start game two of the series and he comes into the game with a 3-1 record and a team-best 28 strikeouts and 38.1 innings. Samuel Myers (2-2) makes the Sunday start and is off to a strong start to the season as he is registering a 2.76 ERA over 29.1 innings this season. Monday's starter against the Cougars will be named later in the series.Â
Washington State leads the all-time series with the Matadors, 15-12, but the teams have not faced one another since the 2014 season. Three seasons ago, CSUN hosted the Cougars for four games, winning three times at Matador Field. The Matadors have not visited Washington State since 2013 as the Cougars took three of four games in that series.Â
A Closer Look at Washington State
The Cougars have gone 11-7 on the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 play. Last weekend, Washington State dropped two of three games to USC but closed the series with a 4-1 win. In 2016, Washington State went 19-35 with an 11-19 conference record for an 11th place finish in the Pac-12.Â
Junior infielder Shane Matheny leads the Cougars with a .404 batting average at the plate to go along with two home runs, two triples, 10 doubles, 13 RBI and a .754 slugging percentage. Tied with Matheny for the team lead in RBI, sophomore catcher Cory Meyer is batting .339 wih 11 runs scored, three doubles and a home run.Â
On the pitching side, junior left hander Damon Jones is 1-1 with a 4.18 ERA and 17 strikeouts on the season. The rest of the Cougar rotation consists of junior right hander Ryan Walker (1-2, 7.83 ERA) junior left hander Cody Anderson (3-0, 1.80 ERA) and freshman left hander A.J. Block (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Anderson leads the team with 31 strikeouts in 30.0 innings of work.Â
