Matadors Fall Twice at Washington State

NORTHRIDGE, CA---
After rain washed away Friday's game, CSUN Baseball (11-12) was swept by Washington State (13-7)  in an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars took game one 11-7 and held on for a 3-0 win in the late afternoon contest. Fred Smith finished with a team-leading three hits along with an RBI in the doubleheader to push his streak of reaching base safely to 11 consecutive games. Also picking up the slack offensively, Kevin Riley posted two hits, three RBI and a home run. Tei Vanderford hurled seven quality innings in game two, allowing one run on just one hit.Â
In the opener, the Matadors jumped in front early with a two-run first inning. With runners at the corners and one out, Albee Weiss drove in his team-best 21st RBI of the season with a double down the left field line to plate Justin Toerner. Two batters later, Nolan Bumstead singled through the right side to bring home Weiss from third base.Â
Earning the start in game one, Samuel Myers retired the side in order in the bottom of the first but the Cougars would respond in a big way with 10 runs over the next five innings. In the second, Cory Meyer walked and later scored on an error in left field. A second run would come across on a wild pitch, scoring J.J. Hancock to even the game at 2-2. Washington State took the lead in the third on a sacrifice bunt from James Rudkin with runners at the corners.Â
Two costly CSUN errors led to three unearned runs to come across in the fourth and the Cougars added four more in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-2. Dillion Plew doubled in a run in the sixth and Rudkin added two more with a double to left field. WSU's 10th run scored after a Matador error in center field.Â
Looking up at a huge deficit, the Matadors clawed back in the game with a five-run seventh to cut the WSU lead to 10-7. Four wild pitches led to Riley Conlan scoring from third base in the frame and Smith singled in another with a shot through the right side. Riley would follow with a three-run home run to right field.Â
The Cougars answered back with a run in the seventh, but the Matadors managed to bring the tying run to the on-deck circle in the top of the ninth. With runners at first and second base and two outs, Weiss stepped to the plate but Scotty Sunitsch recorded the final out on a grounder to secure the win for the Cougars.Â
Unlike game one, game two would be a pitcher's duel as Vanderford and WSU's Ryan Walker traded zeroes throughout the afternoon.Â
Vandeford surrendered a run in the second inning on a bases loaded walk but rebounded by retiring the next 14 batters in order. Walking five batters through the first two innings, Vanderford only surrendered one more free pass for the remainder of the day. The Cougars only managed just one hit against Vanderford in the contest as Hancock doubled to start the second inning.Â
On the flip side, the Matadors were unable to push across any runs against Walker. CSUNÂ threatened in the third with runners at the corners with one out but Walker picked up a key double play on a grounder from Smith. After the third, Walker retired seven straight until Toerner singled in the sixth.Â
The Matadors placed the tying and go-ahead run on base in the sixth with one out. Smith followed Toerner's hit with an infield single to third base to bring up the middle of the order. Walker responded nicely by first retiring Riley then forcing Weiss to hit into a fielder's choice to end the frame.Â
Walker gave up a leadoff single to Bumstead to start the seventh, prompting a change on the mound. With reliever Trenton Dupre on the mound, Elias Orona laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run to second base. After Dupre hit Conlan, Michael Russo reached on a fielder's choice to move Bumstead to third base. Dupre escaped trouble, however, by striking out William Colantono swinging.Â
Still a 1-0 game in the eighth, Washington State added two crucial insurance runs off Conner O'Neil. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Hancock drove in both runs on a double to right center field.Â
The combination of Dupre and Joe Rosenstein retired the Matadors in order in the eighth and ninth innings to seal doubleheader sweep.Â
In game one, Ray Diaz tossed 1.1 shutout innings, striking out three batters. Matt Campbell worked 0.1 shutout innings while Blake Schriever gave up a run in one inning of work.Â
The Matadors and Cougars continue their series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for noon. Originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time, the game was moved up due to anticipated rain to hit the Pullman, WA area in the afternoon.Â
