The Matadors are coming off a pair of games in the Pacific Northwest as CSUNÂ dropped a Friday match at Washington State 3-0 but bounced back to shut out Eastern Washington 2-0 on Sunday. On their current road trip, the Matadors have gone 1-1-1.Â
CSUN dug an early hole against Washington State as two goals in the first 7:06 of the contest would be too much to overcome. Senior goalkeeper Jenna Koziol saw a career-high 73 minutes in between the posts and collected three saves.Â
Against Eastern Washington, the Matadors were the ones to strike early as Amanda Martin found Marissa Favela for the junior's fourth goal of the season in the 14th minute. CSUN later added an insurance goal late in the second half courtesy of freshman Amy Aquino to secure the win. Despite being out shot 25-12, the Matadors held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal for the match. Jovani McCaskill collected her third shutout of the season after registering six saves. Aquino's goal, which came via an Eagle turnover, was her first career goal.Â
Favela continues to be one of the top scorers in the Big West Conference this season. She currently sits in second place in points (10) and in a second-place tie in goals and shots (23). Favela is also leading the Matadors in shots on goal with 12. Cynthia Sanchez is tied with Favela with 23 shots and tied for eighth place in the league with two goals. With three helpers, Sylvia Trinh is tied for second on the Big West's assist list.Â
McCaskill's third shutout of the year was also her 24th of her Matador career, which brings her within three of tying assistant coach Cynthia Rosas' all-time CSUNÂ record. She also moved into fourth place on CSUN's all-time career saves list with 191. On the season, McCaskill is third in the Big West in save percentage (.833) and fourth in goals against average (0.74).Â
In the all time head-to-head series, Texas Tech leads CSUN 2-0. The Red Raiders pulled out a 2-1 double overtime win from the Matadors in the teams' last meeting two seasons ago. The Matadors' only trip to Lubbock, TX took place in 2013 as Texas Tech prevailed, 3-1.
