CSUN Seventh, Helgo 17th at Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Freshman Tomas Helgo posted his second consecutive top-20 finish to lead the Matador Men's Golf team to a seventh place finish Tuesday at the CSUN's own Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
The Matadors, who were second after an opening team round of 287, could not match that total over the final two rounds finishing with scores of 294-299 and wound up seventh in the 17-team field. CSUN's best round (287) came Monday morning when the Santa Ana winds were the strongest.
"Losing Michael (Zhang) in the final round probably hurt us a few shots, but I'm not unhappy finishing seventh in these conditions," said CSUNÂ head coach Jim Bracken. "Obviously you want to win your home tournament but this was a strong field with a lot of good players, hopefully we'll build on this performance."
Helgo, who was 12th at Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational (Oct. 1-2), finished tied for 17th at even-par 216 to lead the Matadors. Helgo, who posted rounds of 75-71 on Monday, closed with five birdies on his way to a two-under 70 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Gabriel Barnes, playing as an individual, and senior Tomas Skajem tied for 24th at two-over 218. Skajem led the 100-player field after firing a six-under 66 in Monday's opening round. Skajem followed up with consecutive rounds of 76 while Barnes posted consistent rounds of 73-72-73.
Freshman Paul-Louis Gachet was two shots back in a tie for 34th at four-over 220 following rounds of 73-72-75. Ryan Hoffenberg, one of three Matador individuals, finished tied for 52nd at seven-over 223 (78-72-73) while Luis Calderon tied for 80th at 16-over 232 (77-77-78). Sevian Frangipane completed the CSUN trio playing as individuals, tying for 95th at 25-over 241 (86-80-75).
Zhang, began the day tied for 37th after rounds of 73-75 on Monday, was forced to withdraw early in the final round after suffering from a bee sting.
"Tomas (Skajem) shooting a 66 in the first round was great, it's nice to know that that's there in his arsenal," added Bracken. "The two freshman played well; Tomas (Helgo) had his second top-20 finish and although Paul-Louis was frustrated, his scores are good and I know he can play much better."
Boise State earned both the team and individual titles as the Broncos carded a blistering 272 on Tuesday to finish at 21-under 843, eight shots ahead of Cal State Fullerton. Brian Humphreys took home individual medalist honors at 11-under 205.
CSUNÂ closes the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule Oct. 25 with the first of three rounds at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton.
