STOCKTON, Calif. - Freshman Tomas Helgo fired a tournament-best seven birdies on his way to an opening round four-under 67 Thursday at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at Stockton Country Club.
Helgo is tied for fourth while CSUN is 14th following a team round of 288. Helgo's 67 is his season low and just a stroke off Tomas Skajem's team season low of 66. Helgo, who started the day on the No. 10 tee, was three-under through nine holes.
The freshman from Norway then had three more birdies on the front nine, including a birdie at No. 8 to get to five-under. But a bogey five on his final hole dropped him to four-over for the day. Helgo heads into the second round just three shots behind Kevin Kelso of San Jose State who leads at seven-under 64.
Fellow freshman Paul-Louis Gachet is also in the hunt after tying for 15th with a two-under 69 on Thursday. Gachet, who fired his low round as a Matador, was three-under through nine holes where he remained until his final hole saw him post a bogey five to slip to two-under.
The rest of the Matador squad is in the lower half of the field after 18 holes as senior Tomas Skajem and sophomore Michael Zhang are tied for 74th at five-over 76. Gabriel Barnes is 85th at eight-over 79 followed by Luis Calderon who is tied for 86th at 10-over 81. Calderon is competing individually for the Matadors.
In addition to Kelso leading the individual competition, San Jose State also leads the team chase as the Spartans (271) have a four-shot lead over BYU (275). The Matadors are 14th at 288 but are currently just four shots out of the top-10.
The second round gets underway for the Matadors Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. CSUNÂ will be paired with Cal Baptist and UC Riverside for round two.
