STOCKTON, Calif. - Freshman Tomas Helgo carded a second round one-under 70 Friday and is firmly in the hunt through two rounds of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
Helgo, who opened the day tied for fourth after a four-under 67 on Thursday, had five birdies and was three-under through 17 holes on Friday. But a double bogey six on the par-four ninth hole, his final hole of the day, dropped him to one-under for the day and five-under for the tournament.
"Tomas played well yesterday and played well again today," said head coach Jim Bracken. "He could easily been seven-under for the tournament but four-putted his final hole, he's in good shape for a low round tomorrow."
Helgo opens Saturday's final round just four shots back of leader Peter Kuest of BYU who holds the individual lead at nine-under 133.
Freshman Paul-Louis Gachet is just outside of the top-30 after two rounds after a second round 73. Gachet, who was tied for 15th after an opening round 69, had three birdies and five bogeys but slipped into a tie for 31st at even-par 142.
Also for the Matadors, senior Tomas Skajem is tied for 70th at six-over 148 following rounds of 76-72, junior Michael Zhang is tied for 73rd at seven-over 149 (76-73) and Gabriel Barnes is tied for 83rd at 10-over 152 (79-73). Luis Calderon is also competing for the Matadors as an individual and is currently 87th at 13-over 155 (81-74).
As a team, CSUN was 14th after Thursday's team round of 288 and the Matadors moved up one spot after matching that team total Friday with a second consecutive 288.
"It was a better team effort today, we're certainly capable of shooting low scores," said Bracken. "We're close to the middle of the pack and I'd like to see us shoot an under-par team score tomorrow and move into the top-10."
CSUN will tee off Saturday's final round beginning at 8:45 a.m. off the 10th tee. The Matadors will be paired with Grand Canyon and Fresno State for the final round.
