STOCKTON, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team got off to a rough start and were not able to move up the leaderboard in the final round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Saturday at Stockton Country Club.
After consecutive team rounds of 288 on Thursday and Friday, the Matadors looked poised to post a solid final round and potentially move up the final leaderboard. But a team round of 293 dropped CSUN two spots from 13th to 15th with a tournament score of (+17) 869. Â
"We got off to a bad start today and unfortunately didn't shoot under par to move up, but I was proud of the way the team showed composure and battled the rest of the round," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We're still a very young team so we'll take some small victories at this point of the season."
Freshman Tomas Helgo shot an impressive 67 on Thursday but wasn't able to replicate that score over the final two rounds. Helgo, who was tied for fourth after 18 holes, slipped into a tie for 14th at four-over 209 following a final round one-over 72. The 14th place finish marks the third consecutive top-20 finish for the CSUN freshman.
Fellow freshman Paul-Louis Gachet, who opened with a 69, posted his second straight round of two-over 73 on Saturday to slip into a tie for 40th at two-over 215. Michael Zhang had his best round Saturday with a one-over 72 to move up into a tie for 65th at eight-over 221 (76-73-72) while Tomas Skajem and Gabriel Barnes were one shot apart in 82nd and 83rd.Â
Skajem finished with rounds of 76-72-79 for a three-round total of 14-over 227 while Barnes posted scores of 79-73-76 for a 15-over total of 228. Senior Luis Calderon competed as an individual and finished 87th at 18-over 231 (81-74-76).
"This team has talent so we're looking forward to the spring season," added Bracken. "We'll work on some things over the break and as we get more and more experience, I'm confident this team will be fine when the conference championship comes around."
The Matadors will be back on the course Feb. 11 at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon Golf Club in Newport Beach.
