FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball returns to action on Tuesday evening as the Matadors travel to Loyola Marymount with tip off slated for 6 p.m. The game will stream live on TheW.TV while an audio broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
Due to wildfires in the Malibu area last weekend, the Matadors' Saturday game at Pepperdine was postponed. The teams plan to make up that game on a future date this season.
The Matadors opened up the 2018-19 campaign on Nov. 6 as CSUN fell to New Mexico 87-84 in a thrilling season opener. The teams traded 13 leads including nine in the second half. CSUN would erase an 84-80 lead with 34 seconds left to even the game late. After graduate Cameron Gottfried scored on a driving layup, CSUN forced a turnover, leading to game-tying jumper from freshman Lamine Diane with six seconds on the clock. The Lobos' Anthony Mathis though would hit a game-winning 3-pointer off the glass to down the Matadors.
Making his collegiate debut, Diane scored a game-high 34 points on 15-of-28 shooting to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 21 points and four 3-pointers. Starting in their first game with CSUN, freshman Elijah Harkless filled up the stat sheet with six rebounds, five points and four steals while freshman Michael Ou had six points and three rebounds, and Gottfried picked up six rebounds, four points and two assists.
Other freshmen on the team, Darius Brown II chipped in with six points and three steals, Jared Pearre grabbed five rebounds and scored three points, and Teddy Ochieng pulled down three rebounds. Sophomore Alex Sokol made his first career basket in the game, finishing with five points.Â
Diane's season debut against the Lobos will go down as one of the top performances in team history. His 34 points are the most scored by a freshman or a player making their debut in Matador history while his 15 field goals tied Lenny Daniel (2009-11) for the most baskets in a single game in the Division I era. Diane is the first Matador to score at least 34 points in a game since Josh Greene tallied 37 against Hawai'i in March 2013. Also, his scoring total was the fifth-most on opening night across all of Division I basketball.
Dating back to the 1968-69 season, CSUN and Loyola Marymount have faced off 20 times with the Lions prevailing in 13 of those games. The teams have met in each of the last three seasons as LMU has won each contest. The Lions defeated the Matadors 82-80 in overtime in the teams' last meeting at Gersten Pavilion in 2015. Over the past two seasons, the Lions have beat the Matadors in The Matadome, winning 69-68 in 2016 and 74-57 in 2017. The Matadors are 1-8 all time on the road in the series and are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak at LMU. In fact, the Matadors lone win at LMU came in Dec. 1970 (81-79).
A Closer Look at Loyola Marymount

Last season, LMU went 11-20 overall and 5-13 in the West Coast Conference, eventually falling to Gonzaga in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
Senior James Batemon leads the team in scoring through two games, averaging 19.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. Last season, Batemon scored a game-high 25 points with four 3-pointers in the win over CSUN. Senior Jeffery McClendon has also been an offensive threat, scoring 11.5 points while junior Mattias Markusson has grabbed a team-best 8.5 rebounds to go with 8.5 points per game.
