CSUN Loses to New Mexico on Last-Second 3-Pointer
11/6/2018 9:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---After freshman Lamine Diane hit a game-tying jumper with six seconds left, New Mexico would knock down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer off the glass to defeat CSUN Men's Basketball 87-84 in both teams' season opener on Tuesday at The Matadome. Diane tallied 34 points and seven rebounds in his first career collegiate game while sophomore Terrell Gomez collected 21 points and four 3-pointers.
"I'm heartbroken for them because they played so hard and it was a tough way to end it on a bank shot from three," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We're going to get better, there's a lot of great things to build on tonight.
"We've got so many young guys and inexperienced guys," added Gottfried. "Really Terrell [Gomez] is the only guy on our team that has significant Division I experience. We played against a team with a lot of upperclassmen. These guys are going to get better and better every night. They showed tonight they've got great character. They've got toughness and they play hard."
In front of a raucous Matadome crowd, the Matadors battled the Lobos in a thrilling season opener featuring 13 lead changes and six ties. The game though would come down to the final possession. The Lobos' Anthony Mathis would hit a game-winning 3-pointer from well-beyond the arc with 00.3 on the clock to lift New Mexico past CSUN.
Earlier in the contest, the Matadors came out fast, scoring the game's first six points. Diane gave the Matadors an early 8-4 lead on a layup before the Lobos scored the next five points. It would be the first of many lead changes on the night.
The Lobos led by as many as eight points in the first half (16-8) before the Matadors stormed back to reclaim the lead at 21-19 on back-to-back 3-pointers from Gomez. The Matadors would hit seven 3-pointers in the first half including three-straight, capped off by a trey from Darius Brown II that put CSUN on top 42-35 with 2:35 left. However, the Lobos closed the period in strong fashion, scoring seven-straight points down the stretch to even the game at 42-42 at the break. Gomez finished with a game-high 16 points in the period.
In the second half, the Matadors stayed with the Lobos and went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico would build a 50-44 lead at the 17:16 mark. From there, Diane went to work on the offensive end. Scoring eight-straight Matador points, Diane's tip-in gave the Matadors a 54-53 lead with just under 13 minutes to play. The teams traded leads three times in a row near the midway mark of the period before the Lobos stretched to a 63-58 lead on a driving layup from Corey Manigault. CSUN would fall behind by seven points with 9:13 to play before making yet another charge.
Diane created back-to-back highlight plays, first on a dunk via a pass from Elijah Harkless, then on a breakaway slam dunk following a steal. Gomez would pull the Matadors to within 72-71 on a 3-point play before Harkless gave the Matadors the lead on the next possession. After taking a 77-74 lead, the Matadors though surrendered eight-straight points to fall behind by five (82-77).
The Lobos led 84-80 following a layup from Makuach Maluach with 34 seconds left to play. Showing no quit, the Matadors battled back with a layup from Cameron Gottfried. The Matadors then forced a turnover leading to a game-tying jumper from Diane in the lane. However, the Lobos would end the night with a long 3-pointer from Mathis to win the game.
Diane's 34 points are the most by a Matador since Josh Greene poured in 37 points against Hawai'i in March 2013. Going 15-for-28 from the field, Diane recorded the fifth-most field goals in team history on Tuesday.
The Matadors hit the road for a short two-game road trip starting Saturday at Pepperdine. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 6:50 p.m.
