SAN JOSE, Calif.—San José State defeated CSUN 4-0 in the women's tennis dual opener for the Matadors Saturday afternoon.
The dual began with doubles competition. At No. 1, Sybille Gauvain and Miyo Kobayahsi defeated Monika Van de Vondel and Alicia Dinkelmeyer 6-3. No. 2 saw Kirayng Kim and Mari Taslagyan defeat Tamara Cuilbrk and Laura Malsert 6-4. Doubles wrapped up with Jackie Wagner and Savannah Sendar defeat Skyla Alcon and Arpe Bagumyan 7-5.
The first singles match to conclude was at No. 5 as Malsert defeated Bagumyan 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 singles finished next. Cuilbrk handed Alcon a 7-5, 6-2 defeated to make it 3-1. The dual concluded at No. 6 singles when Sendar defeated Scout Shutter 6-1, 6-3. Van de Vondel was ahead at No. 1 singles, 6-4 when the dual was halted.
"We competed well today against the defending Mountain West champs," said head coach Gary Victor. "Our energy was excellent, and our doubles was very solid. All were close, and Ki and Mari were able to close it out while Skyla and Arpe had many opportunities and fell just short 7-5. Monika showed what she is capable of with a nationally ranked opponent as she was up a set when the dual was stopped. It was good to have Scout's energy and fight in the lineup. She inspires everyone every day."
The Matadors (0-1) travel to Santa Clara Sunday for an 11 a.m. start.
