Matadors Fall to Harvard 4-2

NORTHRIDGE, CA--Harvard (7-8) got off to a strong start, and CSUN (2-7) hung tough throughout the day, but ultimately the Crimson got the upper hand, taking the duel 4-2 on Saturday morning at the Matador Tennis Complex.
The Crimson began the morning by taking the doubles point. Annika Ringblom and Anna Li defeated Skyla Alcon and Monika Van de Vondel 6-3 on Court #1. Erica Oosterhout and Natasha Gonzalez took down Alicia Dinkelmeyer  and Mari Taslagyan 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles also went to Harvard, as Irene Lu and Isabel Jasper beat Arpe Bagumyan and Emma Roenholt 6-3.Â
Singles play opened when Oosterhout beat Alcon (6-1, 6-0) on Court #1. On Court #6, Scout Shutter was handed a defeat by Lexi Milunovich, (6-1, 6-2), extending Harvard's lead to 3-0.Â
The Matadors did not fall without a fight however, as Dinkelmeyer got her third consecutive win and second in two days. She beat Ringblom (6-4, 6-4), and improved her record to 4-1 in singles play on the campaign. Taslagyan also won her second in as many days as well. She defeated Gonzalez, (7-5, 6-4) to pull the Matadors within one.Â
Bagumyan pushed Jenna Moustafa to a third set, but in the end came up just a bit short (6-4, 4-6, 6-0), giving Harvard the victory. Â
Even though things did not fall the Matadors' way, coach Gary Victor was happy with their effort.Â
"We played at a different level today, it was much better," said Victor. "We played a much stronger team and we gave ourselves a chance to win. I thought we fought hard on every court. The challenge for the team was to compete better today and I think we did that."
The Matadors will travel to Newark as they take on the Delaware Blue Hens on Tuesday, March 20th. Duel set to begin at 11:00 a.m.Â
