NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUNÂ beach volleyball team had its seven-match winning streak snapped Wednesday as No. 16 Loyola Marymount defeated the Matadors 4-1 at the CSUNÂ Beach Volleyball Facility.
CSUN, which hadn't lost since a 5-0 defeat to No. 7 Long Beach State on Mar. 4, drops to 9-2 on the season. The Lions improve to 9-7 with the win.
In a dual that was closer than the final tally would indicate, the Matadors won the No. 2 pair but went to three sets in both the No. 1 and No. 3 contests.
"Obviously two of the matches went three sets, I think we were in the battle but the outcome just wasn't in our favor," said CSUNÂ head coach Noelle Rooke. "I'm proud of the fight the team showed, this was good experience seeing what they're going to show us especially when we see them again in two weeks."
Kristey Markle and Nickeisha Williams picked up the Matadors' lone win Wednesday, defeating Jessie Prichard and Sara Kovac 21-15, 21-19. Markle and Williams have now won seven of their last eight matches to improve to 9-2 on the season.
The No. 6 match was the first to go final as Kristen Castellanos and Cierra Simpson defeated Nicolette Pinkney and Cassidy Rosso 21-19, 21-18. Former Matador Maddie Leiphardt and Bozeno Culo picked up LMU's first point with a win at No. 4, defeating Erin Indermill and Daniella Molinari 21-18, 21-11.
Markle and Williams then pulled CSUN even heading into the second flight of matches which all went to the visitors.
After Kekai Whitford and Chloe Reinig defeated Shawnee De Oliveira and Rosso 21-14, 21-11 at No. 5, the Lions clinched the dual with a three-set win at No. 3. Emma Doud and Veronica Neverend held off Lauren McMurray and Autumn Russell 21-13, 12-21, 15-9.
Savannah Slattery and McKayla Ferris then went the distance to top Katie Sato and Aeryn Owens 21-16, 18-21, 15-6 at No. 1 making the final 4-1.
CSUNÂ continues a busy week Friday as the Matadors play three matches at the Big West Challenge outside Sacramento.
