ELK GROVE, Calif. - After carding an opening round 313, the CSUN men's golf team improved by 17 shots in round two and sits in 10th-place through two rounds of the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club.
The Matadors were 11th out of 12 teams after the opening round 313 but were able to move up one spot following an eight-over total of 296 in round two. CSUNÂ is currently 10 shots behind Sacramento State and a possible top 10 finish.
Long Beach State (579) carries a three shot lead over UC Irvine (582) into Tuesday's final round.
"I was happy to see a little fire there in the second round," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We just need to play better, we're putting the work in but haven't seen the fruits of that yet. If we can put together a good round tomorrow we'll build off that.
Individually, senior Felix Mory overcame a poor first round 75 to post a one-under 71 in the afternoon round. Mory had just three birdies in round one before nearly doubling that total in round two. At two-over 146, the Matador senior heads into Tuesday's final round tied for 11th, just five shots behind the individual co-leaders NIck Cantlay of Long Beach State and Brett Bennett who are at three-under 141.
Junior Luis Calderon also overcame a rough first round to post a seven stroke improvement in round two. After an opening round 80, Calderon fired his low round of the season with a one-over 73 in the second round. Calderon, who is tied for 44th at nine-over 153, went birdie-less in round one before posting four in the second round.
Jason McGuinness nearly matched Calderon from round one to round two but finished with rounds of 80-75 and is tied for 50th at 11-over 155. Tomas Skajem is tied for 57th at 13-over 157 following rounds of 80-77 and Michael Zhang is tied for 60th at 15-over 159 after posting scores of 78-81.
