ELK GROVE, Calif. - Senior Felix Mory continued his impressive season, finishing tied for 18th Tuesday at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club.
As a team, CSUNÂ followed up Monday rounds of 313-296 with a final round 303 but could not move out of 10th place.
Mory, who has been the low CSUN player in all seven tournaments this season, finished with a three-over 75 to tie for 18th at five-over 221. Mory was four-over through 12 holes before birdies at No. 6 and No. 7 got him back to two-over. But a bogey at No. 8 pushed him back to three-over where he stayed for the day.
Mory now has three top-10 finishes and three top-20 finishes in seven tournaments this season.
Junior Jason McGuinness posted his second consecutive round of 75 on Tuesday to match his 54-hole season low while also posting his best finish. McGuinness had four birdies including one on his final hole to get back to three-under for the day and 14-over 230 for the tournament.
After posting a season-low round of 73 on Monday, Luis Calderon finished with a seven-over 79 on Tuesday to slip from 44th to 52nd at 16-over 232. Michael Zhang posted his best round of the tournament with a final round 75 to move up to 58th at 18-over 234 while Tomas Skajem rounded out the CSUN scoring in 60th place at 19-over 235 following rounds of 80-77-78.
Joey Varnam also competed as an individual and 65th at 25-over 241 with scores of 84-80-77.Â
"We got off to a horrendous start but it was a positive that the guys didn't throw in the towel," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We grinded today but in the end we're still making too many mistakes. We'll get back to work and hopefully have a better showing in Arizona next week."
The Matadors are back on the course next week (Mar. 16-17) as CSUNÂ travels to Phoenix, Ariz. for the GCU Invitational.
