No. 9 CSUN Sweeps UC San Diego in Regular Season Finale
4/15/2018 12:07:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
LA JOLLA, CA – Dimitar Kalchev and Arvis Greene combined for 26 of CSUN's 45 kills as the ninth-ranked Matadors closed the regular season with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 sweep over UC San Diego Saturday at RIMAC Arena.
CSUN, which improved to 15-10 overall and 5-5 in the Big West, will be either the third or fourth seed in the Big West Tournament which gets underway Thursday at Long Beach State.
Kalchev had his best hitting night since connecting for 18 kills against George Mason on Mar. 9. The junior outside hitter had a match-high 15 kills, hitting .444 on 27 attacks. Greene added 11 kills (.231) to go with six digs and three blocks.
A trio of Matadors added six kills apiece as senior Josiah Byers hit a match-high .750 while adding six blocks. Eric Chance hit .455 and Maciej Ptaszynski hit .385 as CSUN hit .386 behind 34 assists from Sam Porter.
The Matadors posted a sizable advantage in blocks, 10.5-4.0 while also out-digging the Tritons 30-24. CSUN libero Emmett Enriques had a match-high 10 digs in the win.
"I'm really happy to get this win and close out the first-ever BIg West season with a win," added Campbell. "It really doesn't matter who we play in the Big West Tournament, we're going to need to play well. Everyone in the Big West is good so we'll get some rest and get ready for another big match Thursday."
After the two teams split the first four points of the match, a pair of UCSD hitting errors sent the Matadors on a 9-2 run which gave CSUN its largest lead at 11-4. An ensuing 5-1 run by the hosts cut the lead to 12-9 before a Greene kill pushed the lead back to four at 15-11.
Still leading by four (23-19), the Tritons scored twice to trim the lead to 23-21 before a UCSD hitting error followed by a Byers-Porter block on set point gave the Matadors the 25-21 win.
In set two, neither team held more than a two-point lead until a Chance-Porter block put CSUN in front 10-7. A Kalchev kill forced a UCSD timeout at 11-7 but the Matadors kept rolling, stretching the lead to 13-7 following another Kalchev kill.
CSUN led by as many as seven points in the frame, which ultimately turned out to be the final margin (25-18).
The Tritons tallied the first two points of the final set before the Matadors stormed back with a 10-3 run. A Greene kill gave CSUN its largest lead (16-10), forcing a UCSD timeout. The Matador lead was never less than three points the rest of the way as they closed out the Tritons 3-0.
Tanner Syftestad, one of seven Triton seniors honored in a pre-match ceremony, had 11 kills to lead the Tritons (9-18, 0-10).
Depending on the winner of the Long Beach State-Hawai'i match late Saturday night, the final regular season standings will be determined by that outcome.
