IRVINE, Calif. - CSUNÂ women's golf carded its best round of the Big West Championship Tuesday but a final round 301 wasn't enough to pull the Matadors out of eighth place at the conclusion of the 2018 conference championship.
CSUN (306-315-301) was paced by senior Shenna DeLeon who was one of two Matadors to finish in the top-20. DeLeon, who was 31st after an opening round 79, fought her way back into the top-15 with a second round 75 and a final round 73. In her final collegiate tournament, DeLeon was even at the turn before dropping to three-over after 14 holes. But a birdie at No. 17 got her back to two-over for the day and 14-over 227 for the championship.
It marked DeLeon's best ever finish at the Big West Championship after finishing 29th in 2016 and 31st in 2017.
"We had some bright moments in the championship," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "I'm very proud of Shenna in her last collegiate event. She showed poise and determination to close out her Matador career well."
Sophomore Michelle Duan was the other Matador player in the top-20 as she tied for 20th at 16-over 229. Duan was CSUN's low player after an opening round 72 before struggling to a second round 81. She had one double-bogey in an otherwise errorless front nine before a birdie and four bogeys on the back nine ended her day at five-over 76.
Alice Duan capped a solid sophomore season by finishing tied for 27th at at 19-over 232. CSUN's low scorer all season, Duan finished her second championship tournament with rounds of 76-80-76, good for 27th which was an improvement on her 37th place finish last year.
Brooke Hamilton tied for 34th at 26-over 239 and Kayla Yn wound up 36th at 27-over 240.Â
Long Beach State led wire to wire to capture the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals. The 49ers (879) finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place UC Davis (889) with UC Irvine (897) third, Cal Poly (902) fourth, Hawai'i (903) fifth, UC Riverside (915) sixth and Cal State Fullerton (916) seventh.
The 49ers' Jennifer Yu earned the conference's individual championship, carding a three-round total of even-par 213.
