LONG BEACH, Calif.—The CSUN men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Long Beach State Invitational this past Friday and Saturday.

MEN'S RECAP
Manuel Vargas finished fifth in the 5000m in a time of 15:12.16. James Atwell also scored for the Matadors in the 5000m as he came in seventh (15:15.31).

Erick Loomis was seventh in the hammer throw (211-4).
Â
Charlie Nettle placed seventh in the 3000m steeplechase as he ran 9:35.31.
Michael Merchan finished eighth in the 1500m in a time of 3:50.82.
Clint Meyer was eighth in the shot put with a toss of 58-8.

CSUN's 13 team points gave the Matadors a 18th place finish in the team race. 68 teams scored with Long Beach State (51) winning the team title.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Jasmine Vasquez and Katie Alvarenga both scored for CSUN in the 5000m. Vasquez ran a CSUN best 5000m time of 17:41.26 to place third. Alvarenga put up her season best time, 18:04.66, in the race, to finish seventh.

Kimberly Newton finished eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 39.23.23.

As a team, CSUN finished 24th (9) among 59 teams which scored. Minnesota (99) was the team winner.

"We had a pretty competitive outing for our teams today," said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson. "We competed in two pretty challenging meets over the past three days and the athletes preserved some long days in the process. We keep adding more Big West and regional qualifiers, so I'm encouraged for championships' season."

The Matadors travel to the UC Irvine Steve Scott Invitational and the University of Arizona Desert Classic next weekend to conclude the regular season.
