Â
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i defeated CSUN 7-0 in the regular season finale for both squads Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine opened the scoring by taking the doubles point. Petra Meiounova and Roxanne Resma got the victory on No. 2 doubles by defeating Alicia Dinkelmeyer and Mari Taslagyan, 6-4. Hawai'i ended up clinching doubles with a win at No. 3 doubles thanks to Alzbeta Houbova and Marina Hruba. Houbova and Hrbua defeated Emma Roenholt and Arpe Bagumyan, 6-4.
Â
CSUN went to three sets at No.1, No.2, and No. 5 singles, but the Rainbow Wahine came away with the victories. At No. 1, No. 72 Petra Melounova defeated Monika Van de Vondel 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Alicia Dinkelmeyer had her 10-match singles winning streak halted by Nikola Dolakova. Dinkelmeyer took the first set 6-0 before Dolkaova came back to win 6-4, 6-4.
Â
At No. 5 Michelle Pits defeated Mari Taslagyan 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Scout Shutter went to a tiebreaker against Roxanne Resma before losing 10-8. Resma would take the second set 6-4.
Â
"I couldn't be prouder of my team." said CSUN head coach Gary Victor.  "They gave it everything they had. This was a really competitive match. Scout and Mari (seniors) are class people, they do things with integrity and are great student athletes. It's fun to celebrate them and see how hard they are fighting for the Matadors."
Â
Seniors Arpe Bagumyan, Elisaveta Nosenko, Kiryang Kim, Scout Shutter, and Mari Taslagyan were honored after the duel for their performance and dedication to Matador athletics during their respective years as intercollegiate athletes. Bagumyan and Nosenko have one year of eligibility remaining but will graduate this Spring.
Â
Taslagyan was able to reflect on her five years as a Matador after the match. "Every year I have been here has been its own adventure. I've grown so much and have gained a lot of confidence on and off the court," said Taslagyan. "I am going to miss my teammates, but I am an overall stronger person because of this program."
Â
Victor praised the seniors for their perseverance throughout their college careers.
Â
"There are so many ups and downs for any intercollegiate athlete for their career." Victor said. "Scout [Shutter], missed plenty of time due to surgery. For her to compete again at a very high level. It just speaks to her will and what she is made of."
Â
The Matadors (7-11, 3-5 Big West) are the sixth seed in next week's Big West Tournament. CSUN takes on the third seed, Cal State Fullerton on Thursday at 11 a.m.
