CSUN Sits Eighth After Opening Round of Big West Championship
4/29/2018 7:28:00 PM | Men's Golf
INDUSTRY HILLS, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team opened the 2018 Big West Championship Sunday at the Pacific Palms Resort's "Ike Eisenhower" Course as the Matadors carded a first round 305 and sit eighth in the nine team field.
The Matadors, seeking their first team championship since 2000, are 23 shots off the pace set by first round team leaders Cal State Fullerton (282).Â
Individually, CSUNÂ placed a pair of players in the top-25 as senior Felix Mory and junior Tomas Skajem are both tied for 23rd at two-over 74.Â
"You can't win the championship on the first day but you sure can lose it and unfortunately we put ourselves in a tough position," said CSUNÂ Head Coach Jim Bracken. "The bottom line is, I'd like to see us improve each day and pass a few teams but we've got to get off to a better start tomorrow."
Mory, the defending individual champion, had three birdies on Sunday as he was two-over through nine holes. After bogeys on two of his first four holes on the back nine dropped him to four-over, he birdied two of his final five holes to get back to two-over for the day.
Skajem made par on his first eight holes before a birdie at No. 9 sent him to the back nine at one-under. A double bogey at No. 11 and a bogey at the 14th dropped him to two-over for the day where he remained at the end of the round.
"Felix struggled with his putting today but he hung in there and made a couple of birdies to get back to two-over," added Bracken. "Tomas hit the ball horribly on the front nine but was able to get up and down so he hung in there as well. I'd like to see both guys shoot a low round tomorrow and get back in contention."
Mory and Skajem are seven shots off the pace set by UC Santa Barbara's Brandon Bauman who posted an opening round 67.
Also for the Matadors, senior Trym Falch is tied for 36th at six-over 78 after also posting three birdies but also had a triple bogey at No. 10 and a double bogey at No. 15. Michael Zhang had a similar round with three birdies but had a quadruple eight on the par four sixth hole and also had a double bogey at No. 2. Zhang is currently tied for 40th at seven-over 79. Junior Joey Varnam rounded out the CSUNÂ scoring as he is tied for 42nd at eight-over 80.
CSUNÂ will be paired with UC Irvine and Hawai'i again for round two which tees off Monday morning at 8 a.m.
