No. 3 UC Irvine Sweeps Ninth-ranked Matadors
4/7/2018 9:42:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - One night after defeating No. 9 CSUN in a tough five-setter at home, third-ranked UC Irvine came into The Matadome Saturday and handed the Matadors a 3-0 sweep.
After the two teams came into Friday's match tied in the Big West standings, CSUNÂ (13-10, 3-5 Big West) now drops two games behind the Anteaters who improve to 19-7 overall and 5-3 in conference.
Arvis Greene, Dimitar Kalchev and Eric Chance each had eight kills to lead the Matadors, Chance hitting a match-high .700 on 10 swings. But the Matadors, who hit .301 in Friday's five-setter, largely struggled offensively on Saturday, hitting just .127 on 79 attacks.
Kalchev and Maciej Ptaszynski each contributed aces in the loss as Kalchev had one to increase his season total to 36 while Ptaszynski added a pair, giving him 23 in his first season.
CSUN looked good in the early going, taking a 6-2 lead following a Greene-Josiah Byers co-block. A Scott Stadick service error kept the Matador lead at 7-4 before the visitors went on a 5-0 run to open up a 9-7 lead. CSUN battled back to tie the score at 9-9 and again at 10-10 before a 3-0 run gave UCI a 13-10 cushion.
The Matadors stayed within two until a Greene hitting error pushed the Anteater lead to four at 18-14. After a Chance kill trimmed the deficit to 21-18, UCI claimed the final four points of the set to close out a 25-18 win.
After the Anteaters jumped out to a 13-7 lead in set two, CSUN took advantage of a pair of UCI errors and a Greene block to pull within three. But an ensuing 4-1 run by the visitors pushed the lead back to 17-11. Trailing by five at 19-13, the Matadors engineered a 6-0 run, highlighted by kills from Ptaszynski and Greene, to pull even at 19-19.
CSUNÂ could never gain the lead however as UCI maintained at least a one-point lead until a Joel Schneidmiller kill made the final margin 25-23.
The Anteaters opened the final set claiming eight of the first 12 points before a Ptaszynski ace capped a 3-0 Matador run which cut the lead to 8-7. Kalchev's kill capped another 3-0 CSUN which erased a 9-7 Anteater lead and gave the Matadors their first lead at 10-9. A Chance kill gave CSUN its largest lead at 12-10 before UCI put together a 9-2 run to force the Matadors to spend both timeouts.
The Matadors could only get within four points the rest of the way as the Anteaters closed the match with the 25-20 win.
Karl Apfelbach was the only hitter in the match to reach double figures, leading UCI with 12 kills on .524 hitting.
CSUNÂ concludes the 2018 home schedule next Friday with the first of two matches with UC San Diego. The Matadors and Tritons then conclude the regular season the following night in La Jolla.
