CSUN Sends Seniors Off With 3-1 Win Over UCSD
4/13/2018 10:14:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Ninth-ranked CSUNÂ sent its three seniors off on a winning note, topping UC San Diego in four sets (25-22, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17) in a Big West Conference match Friday at The Matadome.
In the process, the Matadors (14-10, 4-5 Big West) picked up a crucial conference victory as they look to improve their seeding in next week's Big West Tournament.
After taking the first two sets, CSUN saw the visiting Tritons claim the third set before the Matadors regained the edge to pull out the four-set win, capping a 10-3 home season.
"I thought UC San Diego played very well at times and really affected us," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "Our middles were phenomenal tonight, we hit .406 at a team which is the highest we've hit in a while. Our passing was pretty good tonight and I thought we did some nice things."
In his final Matadome match, senior Arvis Greene put down a match-high 17 kills, hitting .351 on 37 swings. Josiah Byers also had a memorable senior night as he connected for a season-high 10 kills on .818 hitting, also a season high. Eric Chance, who was also celebrated, added nine kills (.727) as he and Byers combined for six blocks. Â Â
Junior setter Sam Porter had 44 assists as CSUN hit .406, its best offensive hitting clip since hitting .429 against George Mason on Mar. 9.
Neither team could gain much of an edge in the opening set when a Maciej Ptaszynski service error followed by a Triton kill gave the visitors a two-point lead at 18-16. The visitors maintained two-point leads at 20-18, 21-19 and again at 22-20 when a Chance kill propelled the Matadors on a set-clinching 5-0 run.
CSUNÂ then hit .571 to dominate the second set 25-14, setting up a possible sweep. But UCSDÂ turned things around in the third set, out-hitting the Matadors .440 to .120 on their way to a 25-19 win.Â
CSUN raced out to a 9-4 lead in the fourth set after Chance and Dimitar Kalchev put up a co-block. Kalchev, who matched Ptaszynski with a match-high three aces, connected out of the back row giving the Matadors a 16-9 and CSUN would not be threatened the rest of the way.
Tanner Syftestad led UCSDÂ (9-17, 0-9 Big West) with 12 kills (.206) while Wyatt Harrison added 11 kills on .316 hitting.
The two teams will close the regular season Saturday in La Jolla. First serve at RIMAC Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
