CSUN Women 3rd; Matador Men 5th At Big West Champs

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN women's track and field team finished third while the Matador men's program finished fifth as the Big West Championships wrapped up Saturday afternoon on the Matador Track Complex.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Courtney Robinson became the first CSUN competitor to win the Big West 100m hurdles since 2002 (Heather Herron) when she ran a time of :13.56. Robinson would score in two other individual events. She finished fifth in the 100m dash (:11.93) and seventh in the 200m (:24.28).
Brandy Williams won the shot put with a toss of 51-7 3/4. Williams led a 1-2 finish for the Matadors in the event as Jasmine Pharms was the runner-up as she recorded a 50-0 1/2 performance. It is the second year in a row that a CSUN competitor has won the shot (Briana Cueva 2017).
Sydney Berry finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 41-3 1/4.
Samantha Michell placed fourth in the event (:13.89). Michell would later run the fifth fastest 400m hurdles' time in school history, :59.43, to come in third.
Taranique Alexander and Ty Wallace came in fourth and fifth in the triple jump. Alexander went 38-11 1/2 while Wallace turned in a leap of 38-10 1/2.
Sonsoles Barba ran a season best 2:13.82 in the 800 to place seventh. Despite falling, Sydney Mosley would be credited with eighth in the 100m hurdles.
The 4x100m relay of Robinson, Mosley, Michell, and Berry finished second in a time of :46.00. The 4x400m relay of Michell, Robinson, Kayla Pickens, and Barba was sixth (3:49:18).
The Matadors scored 101 points. Long Beach State won the team title with 122 points. The 49ers edged UC Santa Barbara by two points.
"Wow...what a great competition!" said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson. "Our women's team had an outstanding championship meet. We came up short of winning the overall team championship, but I was really impressed with the way the women's team performed overall. We were able to overcome a few falters and injuries and still perform well collectively."
As a result of their performance this weekend, the following earned All-Conference honors (for finishing in the top three of their respective event);

MEN'S RECAP
Daniel Swarbrick (below) won his third consecutive discus title as he recorded a toss of 174-9. He is the first Big West athlete to win three in a row since CSUN's Derek Cooper won the discus from 2008-10. Swarbrick led a 1-2 in the discus as Armon Hunter was the runner-up (174-1).

Joshua Turner turned in a second-place (:14.24) showing in the 110m hurdles. Ben Hibbert also scored in the 110m hurdles as he came in fourth (:14:52).
Javri Fairclough tallied a season best in the triple jump, 50-6, to finish third.
Michael Merchan finished fourth in the 1500m with a time of 3:57.00, a season best for the Matadors. James Silva also scored for CSUN in the 1500 as he came home eighth (3:59.12).
T'Jari Packard posted a fifth-place finish in the 100m (:10.65). Parker Caston placed fifth in the 400m (:47.83). Mario Ramirez was seventh in the 800m (1:52.90) while Matthew Arnold came in seventh in triple jump (49-11).
Louis Pancotti and Logan Cantrell were among five athletes that went 16-0 in the pole vault. Pancotti would be awarded fifth while Cantrell would get seventh. The 16-0 performance is a season best for a CSUN competitor in the pole vault. Alex Hibbert claimed the final point in the 400m hurdles when he placed eighth by running :55.28.
The 4x100m relay of Ben Hibbert, Parker Caston, Packard, and Chazz Warren placed fourth in a time of :41.22. The 4x400m relay of Caston, Ben Hibbert, Ramirez, and Tyree Harriott were sixth (3:17.59).
CSUN score 108 points to finish fifth. Cal State Fullerton was the team champion with 146 points.
"Our men competed extremely hard, and we had guys scoring left and right!" Johnson said. "We had a very quality meet but lacked depth in some critical areas and ultimately that cost us a shot at the team title, but we upped our total number of participants for the regional championship."
