
No.21 CSUN Falls to No.2 Stanford at Barbara Kalbus Invitational

IRVINE, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo ran into a buzzsaw Friday morning as No. 2 Stanford defeated the Matadors 18-4 on the opening day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine.
Jennalyn Barthels, Sara Dempsey, Emma Franck and Rachael Fusco each scored a goal for the Matadors while Kylee Jansen notched two steals.
Stanford jumped all over the Matadors early in the first quarter, scoring twice in the game's first two minutes. The score remained 2-0 until Barthels scored on a power play. The Cardinal scored four more unanswered goals in the period in large part to Sarah Klass. The score after one period was 6-1.
CSUN added goals by Dempsey and Franck in the second period, but were overwhelmed by the second-ranked Cardinal, as Stanford added six more goals in the second to lead by nine (12-3) at halftime.
The Matadors were held scoreless out of the halftime break as Stanford added four more goals to their tally, putting the Cardinal comfortably out in front 16-3 with one quarter left to play.
Stanford added two more in the fourth, extending the final margin to 18-3. The sister duo of Aria and Makenzie Fischer led the way for the Cardinal with eight goals combined. Klass added three of her own as the No. 2 Stanford played to its ranking.

As a result of the loss, the No. 21 Matadors will take on either No. 6 UC Irvine or No. 8 Pacific to begin day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The match will be held at Corona del Mar Pool. CSUN's next opponent following the morning match is to be determined.
