No.21 CSUN Falls Twice to Ranked Teams

IRVINE, Calif -- The No.21 ranked CSUN women's water polo team continued the Barbara Kalbus Invitational by dropping two consecutive matches versus ranked teams. First CSUN fell in it's opening match of the day against host school No.7 UC Irvine 12-8, and then again to No.17Â Long Beach State, 12-8.
UC Irvine Recap
The Matadors hung tough with the host Anteaters for three periods, keeping within one or two goals for most of the match. Jennalyn Barthels and Kylee Jansen accounted for half the goals, as they each scored two each. After entering the fourth quarter only down by a point, a five goal quarter by UC Irvine would prove to be the difference. Tara Prentice had five goals total in the contest, with two
clutch shots in the final period to give her team the advantage.
Prentice made her presence known early,, found the net three consecutive times in the first quarter to give the Anteaters a 3-0 lead in the game's first four minutes.
Madasonne Butler put the Matadors on the board with a power-play goal just under the two-minute mark. Lindsey Garcia with help from Emma Franck brought CSUN to within one at 3-2. Piper Smith would stretch the lead back to two with a goal for UC Irvine, but Franck countered with her a goal of her own to make it 4-3 at the end of the period.
In the second and third periods, defense picked up a bit. Barthels did tie the score at 4-4 all and it would remain so until about three minutes left in the half. Danielle Ayala and Rylee Williams answered the tie with back-to-back goals to give Irvine a 6-4 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, a Megan Falcon goal from Smith put the Anteaters up by three again. The Matadors answered the deficit with goals from Jansen and Tori Wilsonto pull within one (7-6) with one quarter left to play.
In the fourth and final quarter, Prentice notched her fourth goal of the match to put UC Irvine up two. Barthels would counter with a power-play goal to cut the deficit to one again. The Anteaters would then go on to score four unanswered goals which proved to be the difference.

Long Beach State Recap
In the second match of the day and third of the tournament, No. 21 CSUN took on No.17 Long Beach State in a non-conference match that ended 12-5 in favor of The Beach.
The Matador defense held The Beach to one goal in the first quarter in a defensive battle to begin the contest. A Butler goal tied the game up for CSUN and the score remained at one apiece heading into the second.
In the next quarter Long Beach State had the upper hand.. A pair of goals by Paige Bennett and a goal by Olivia Grim would make it 6-2 at the half. Freshman Kylee Jansen had the lone goal of the quarter for CSUN.
Wilson and Katia Andon-Mateos added goals in the third quarter but not before Long Beach added three more to make it a 9-4 game. CSUN tallied one more in the match thanks to Ashlee Sellung but LBSU added three more to their lead which made it a 12-5 final score.

The Matadors will complete the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a match against No. 25 San Diego State at 9 a.m.. The last time CSUN faced off against the Aztecs, the Matadors won 7-3 on Feb. 9.
