No. 23 CSUN Victorious Over Cal State East Bay, 11-7

HAYWARD, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN (14-16, 0-4 BWC) water polo were victorious in their non-conference bout against Cal State East Bay 11-7Â Friday afternoon away from Northridge. Katia Andon-Mateos, Sara Dempsey and Alessia Marquez had a combined seven goals to lead the Matadors. Emma Pfister tallied a game-leading nine saves in the victory.
GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN maintained a lead throughout the entire match after igniting the offense in the first quarter with four goals. The defense of the Matadors maintained as well, as CSUN held Cal State East Bay to only two goals in the quarter.
The Matadors kicked off the scoring with three unanswered goals when Andon-Mateos, Madasonne Butler and Dempsey all finding the back of the net in the early going. Andon-Mateos' goal was of the power play variety and came off an assist from Jennalyn Barthels with a little over three minutes to play in the period.
The Pioneers got on the board thanks to Cheyenne Pena but Lindsey Garcia put the Matadors up by three again with a power play goal under the two-minute mark. With the lead at 4-1, Pena netted her second goal of the game to bring the lead to two at the end of the period.
For the first four minutes of the second quarter, the defense shined for both teams as no goals were scored on either side. Tori Wilson would then go on to net a power play goal to bring the lead back to three for the third time in the match. It would go on to be the only goal scored for either side as CSUN held Cal State East Bay scoreless for the eight minutes prior to the break.
Heading back into the pool after the intermission, both teams would play a more even match, with no teams getting the clear advantage. CSUN's lead that it built in the early going proved to be the difference in a match where the second half was more square.
Marquez stretched the lead to four when she found the back of the net for her first of her two goals on the afternoon. The Pioneers would answer back when Adrien Van Dyke notched her team leading 54th goal on the campaign. CSUEB would then cut the lead again, when Ivanna Anderson tallied an even-strength goal to make it a 6-4 match.
CSUN would end the third with two consecutive goals. Marquez tallied her second goal on the day and Andon-Mateos found the back of the net for her second time. The Matadors would be on top 8-4 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw both teams trading blows but since CSUN had built a four-goal advantage, the Matadors were able to rely on the lead they had built. Andon-Mateos found the net in the fourth, as she led CSUN with three goals. Barthels scored on a penalty shot and Dempsey tallied a goal at even-strength.
