Tennis Wins Fourth in a Row, Finish Non-Conference Play Undefeated at 11-0

SAN DIEGO, Calif - The CSUN women's tennis team (14-4) notched its fourth win in a row and 11th out of last 12 when the Matadors defeated San Diego State, 4-1. For the first time in school history, CSUN went undefeated in non-conference play, an achievement these Matador women will remember for quite a while.
"I'm super proud of this team," said senior leader Skyla Alcon. "To be undefeated in non-conference play is an amazing accomplishment that we've definitely earned. Everybody's attitude and work ethic has been paramount to our success. "
CSUN began the day by taking the doubles point. Sibel Demirbaga and Emma Roenholt took the first half of the point convincingly 6-1 over Magda Aubets and Abbie Mulbarger.The senior duo of Monika Van de Vondel and Alcon would clinch the point for the Matadors, pulling off an upset by defeating No. 70 Alicia Melosch and Nnena Nadozie, 6-4.
In singles play, the Aztecs would strike back right away when Shakhnoza Khatamova captured San Diego State's sole point of the day with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Van de Vondel in the top seeded matchup.
The Matadors would take the next three singles points, beginning with Alcon at No. 2 in straight sets versus Jenny Moinard, 6-4, 6-0. The senior from Hawai'i is now 9-6 on the season in singles play.
CSUN would make it 3-1 when freshman Jolene Coetzee grabbed her 11th win on the campaign by taking down Mia Smith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Matadors clinched the victory thanks to Demirbaga, as she also won in straight sets over her opponent, Aubets, 6-2, 6-2. The freshman from Germany claimed the 15th victory of her first collegiate year. "I think the team did a really good job today, because we showed a lot of confidence and supported each other well." Demirbaga said.
Playing SDSU for the first time since 2012, CSUN's win over SDSU was its third win a row.
"Winning at San Diego State is quite an accomplishment for our young ladies. They play for each other and give it all they've got." CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "Jolene, Skyla and Sibel were able to hang tough through the challenging moments of the match to get the win. Monika and Skyla also played bravely and confidently to get the doubles point. Emma and Sibel brought an energy that was the driving force in how we competed."
At 14-4, the Matadors are posting their best winning percentage since 2015, where CSUN was 15-6 and finished tied for fourth in conference. The Aztecs came into the dual 12-8 and claiming victory in four out of their last five matches. SDSU is also 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference and took duals against Big West foes Hawai'I, UC Riverside and Cal Poly.
CSUN's next contest will be the last regular season match of the year, as the Matadors return home to face UC Santa Barbara, next Friday. Alcon and Van de Vondel, the CSUN seniors will be honored prior to the start of the dual.
