
#21 CSUN Returns to Action Friday at CBU

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (4-2) looks to extend its three-match winning streak when it returns to action Friday. The Matadors visit California Baptist for a pair of matches at Lancer Aquatics Center beginning with a noon meeting with the host Lancers. CSUN then takes on Fresno Pacific at 2:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests and the Matadors' match with CBU will be streamed online on YouTube.com.
The Matadors went 2-0 at the Beach Invite last Saturday, defeating then-ranked No. 24 Azusa Pacific, 9-5, and La Verne, 19-7. CSUN was powered offensively by sophomore Kylee Jansen who scored five goals including a hat trick against the Cougars. Senior Madasonne Butler netted two goals in each match while sophomore Kaitlyn Moguel had a four-goal performance against La Verne. In front of the cage, freshman Meghan Lopez had 12 saves to help beat APU and freshman Piper McCulloch recorded eight saves in the win over the Leopards.
Jansen continues to lead the Matadors in goals heading into week three as she has 11 this season on 39.3 percent shooting. She is currently seventh in the Big West in goals. Second on the team in scoring, senior Tori Wilson has tallied nine on 47.4 percent shooting to go with a Big West-high 15 steals. Wilson is also tied for seventh in the Big West in points with 16. Sophomore Alessia Marquez has notched a conference-leading 10 assists while seniors Jennalyn Barthels and Katia Andon-Mateos have eight helpers apiece.
Lopez is currently second in the Big West in saves with 38 while she is ranked sixth in save percentage (.667) and eighth in goals-against-average (6.33). McCulloch is seventh in the conference in saves (27) to go with an 8.67 GAA.
The Matadors and CBU will meet for the 26th time on Friday afternoon. CSUN leads the all-time series 18-7 and has won 12 of 15 neutral site meetings. The teams have split the last eight meetings with each squad picking up one apiece last season. CBU took the first meeting in 2019 by a 10-8 final despite three goals from Jansen but the Matadors returned the favor with a 14-12 victory behind a six-goal effort from Wilson.
CSUN is 4-0 all-time against Fresno Pacific with all four of those contests taking place on neutral sites. The Matadors cruised to a 12-4 win over the Sunbirds at the Aztec Invitational last season. Wilson notched four goals to lead CSUN offensively in the victory. Last season's meeting was the first contest between the two schools since 2012. CSUN posted three wins over Fresno Pacific from 2008 to 2012.Â
CBU kicked off the 2020 season last week, going 1-1 at its event the Lancer Joust. Top-ranked USC defeated CBU 17-2 in the opener but the Lancers bounced back with a 13-5 win over Chapman. CBU received votes in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll. Kira O'Donell scored a team-high four goals to go with two steals in last week's matches. Grace Ramirez racked up 22 saves and posted a 9.71 GAA last week.
Fresno Pacific (0-3) dropped its only match last week at Cal State East Bay, 14-12. The Sunbirds suffered setbacks to Santa Clara (13-7) and UC Davis (14-5) as well this season. Sam Witt has paced the Sunbirds this season with seven goals, highlighted by a four-goal performance against Cal State East Bay. Camryn Berra has tallied 29 saves through three matches.
