NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN tennis team returns to the courts this week with a single dual.
On Thursday afternoon, the Matadors host the University of New Mexico with the action beginning at 2 p.m. The Lobos have been off since Feb. 7 when UNM fell 4-3 at SMU. New Mexico is 1-3 in dual play this Spring. Bronte Murgett is a team-leading 10-3 in singles and is 6-5 in doubles play. This is the sixth time that CSUN and UNM are playing with the Matadors leading the all-time series 4-1.
CSUN was scheduled to open Big West play on Saturday at UC Irvine. However, due to a inclement weather forecast has now been postponed to a later date.
CSUN came from behind to defeat the University of Oregon 4-3 last Saturday in Northridge to improve to 3-1 in dual play this Spring. The Ducks took the doubles point. Lillian Mould and Julia Eshet opened the day by defeating Ekaterina Repina and Jacquie Tan in the No. 2 slot 6-1. Uxia Martinez Moral and Myah Petchey defeated Emma Roenholt and Lisa-Marie Wurst 6-3 at No. 3 to clinch the point. No. 1 doubles went unfinished.
Wurst got the Matadors on the board with a straight-sets victory at No. 6 singles against Madisen Olsen. Repina tied the dual at two when she handed Rifanty Kahfiania a 7-5, 6-1 defeat at No. 1 singles.
Oregon went back on top when Myah Petchey defeated Roenholt 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. The Ducks went up 4-2 as Julia Eshet beat Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Jolene Coetzee reduced the Oregon lead to one when she came back from a break down in the third to defeat Mould 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
The dual came down to the No. 3 match between Tan and Martinez Moral. The Ducks' player took the first set 6-3. Tan tied the match when she took set two by a 6-2 count. Martinez Moral was up 3-0 in the final set before Tan won six of the next seven games, earning a 6-4 individual victory that clinched the first dual win for the Matadors against the Ducks in four tries.
