
No. 20 CSUN Faces Toronto, Chapman in Midweek Matches

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (10-4) returns to action on Wednesday for a pair of matches. The Matadors take on the University of Toronto at 11 a.m., which will be held at Sage Hill High School. Later that afternoon, CSUN visits Chapman for a 3 p.m. match. Live video will be available for the Matadors and Panthers at champmanathletics.com.Â
The Matadors are riding a three-match winning streak after defeating Whittier and Redlands at the Bulldog Invitational last Saturday. CSUN handed the Poets an 18-8 defeat behind balanced scoring as 10 Matadors hit the back of the net. In the afternoon game, the Matadors beat the host Bulldogs 17-3 with six players scoring multiple times. Senior Jennalyn Barthels and sophomore Kaitlyn Moguel each scored a team-high five goals at the invite while senior Madasonne Butler had a four-goal effort against Whittier. Freshman Piper McCulloch racked up 12 saves in all on the day.
CSUN's 10-4 start to the year is the program's best since the 2010 season when that Matador squad opened up 11-3. With two wins on Wednesday, the Matadors would have their best 16-game start to a season since 2003 (13-3 start).
Senior Katia Andon-Mateos has taken over the team lead in goals with 21 this season on 46.7 percent shooting. Fellow senior Tori Wilson has 20 goals on the year to go with a team-best 33 steals and 23 assists. Sophomore Kylee Jansen has 19 goals in 10 matches while Barthels has registered 17 goals, 22 assists and 24 steals. In front of the cage, freshman Meghan Lopez has 83 saves and a 6.43 goals-against-average in 10 matches.
CSUN is 2-0 in the all-time series with Toronto. The Matadors have defeated the Varsity Blues in each of the last two seasons including by an 11-8 margin last season. Butler scored three goals in the win in 2019 while Barthels, Andon-Mateos and Jansen all had two goals apiece.
Toronto is on a California NCAA tour where the Blues will face seven teams. The Blues fell to Whittier 6-5 but bounced back with a 7-4 win over Redlands on Sunday. Toronto won the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship for the fourth-straight season last fall. The Blues' championship season was also the team's seventh-straight undefeated season.
The Matadors are unbeaten in nine all-time meetings with Chapman. The teams have not plated since the 2014 season when CSUN defeated the Panthers 15-4. CSUN is making its first trip to Chapman since the 2003 season (8-7 win).
The Panthers have been off since Jan. 25 when they dropped two games at California Baptist. Chapman fell to Loyola Marymount 16-3 and CBU 13-5 at that event. Camille Chiang has four goals through the team's two matches while Audrey Hattori had two tallies. Sophie Salstrom has 16 saves in 64 minutes of action in front of the cage.
