
Matadors Extend Winning Streak to Five with Wins over Toronto and Chapman

ORANGE, Calif.---No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (12-4) notched two more wins on Wednesday to run its winning streak to five-straight matches. The Matadors defeated the University of Toronto 11-2 in a morning match played at Sage Hill High School before picking up a road win at Chapman, 16-7. Senior Katia Andon-Mateos led the way with six total goals on the day while senior Madasonne Butler and junior Yuri Cowie had four goals apiece. In goal, freshman Meghan Lopez had 11 saves in the win over Chapman.
CSUN's 12-4 start to the season is the program's second-best start in team history. The 2003 team owns the best 16-game start to a season by going 13-3. The Matadors' five-match winning streak is the team's longest since 2015.

The Matadors dominated the first half, scoring six times while holding the Blues scoreless. Lacey Hall and Dafne Garcia got the Matador offense started in the first quarter with one goal apiece. In the second, CSUN received two goals from Cowie to stretch its lead even further. Butler and Tori Wilson also contributed to a CSUN 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.
Toronto finally picked up its first goal of the match near the midway mark of the third quarter but CSUN answered with three-straight goals in the final three minutes, led by two tallies from Andon-Mateos. Cowie completed the hat trick at the 6:19 mark of the fourth period to give the Matadors a nine-goal lead. In the final seconds, Andon-Mateos also scored her third goal just before the final horn sounded.
Jennalyn Barthels and Alessia Marquez each recorded two assists while Carly Bockstahler had four earned ejections. Piper McCulloch played the full 32 minutes in front of the cage and had seven saves.
"Team defense remains our focus and we got a great effort from one of our freshman goalies in Piper," said head coach Matt Warshaw.

A penalty shot would decide the first goal of the match as Andon-Mateos put the Matadors in front. Butler scored back-to-back goals followed by a second goal from Andon-Mateos that gave CSUN a 4-0 lead. The Panthers earned a power play leading to their first goal but CSUN answered with a goal of its own off a 6-on-5 advantage. Andon-Mateos' third goal of the first period pushed the Matadors ahead 5-1 after eight minutes. Chapman would pull within 7-4 with 3:47 to play in the second period before the CSUN responded with a 4-1 run to take a six-goal lead into halftime. Bockstahler and Helena Sandhagen powered the Matador offense with two goals apiece in the second quarter.
CSUN pulled away even further in the third period, scoring four times all on even strength possessions. Butler scored her third goal of the match in the period while Wilson, Marquez and Garcia also struck the back of the net. The Panthers were held to one goal in the quarter as CSUN held a sizable 15-6 lead. Cowie collected he Matadors' only goal of the final period but the Matador defense looked strong again, holding Chapman to only one tally over the last eight minutes.
Emma Franck registered a team-high four assists while Marquez added three of her own. Barthels picked up two field blocks in the win.
"Chapman was a scrappy team that forced us to stay calm and keep our cool," said Warshaw. "I was proud of the poise we showed throughout the game and much like the morning game we got great contributions from some of our younger players."
