
No. 20 CSUN Opens Up Home Schedule Saturday vs. UCSD, LIU

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (12-4) hosts two opponents Saturday in their first two home matches of the season. The Matadors will play their Big West opener against No. 10 UC San Diego at noon before taking on LIU at 3 p.m.
The Matadors enter Big West play on a five-game winning streak and their best 16-game start to a season since 2003. CSUN's four losses this season have been to Top 10 teams while it has three victories over Top 25 teams. This week, CSUN matained its Top 20 ranking for the second-straight week and for the third time this season.
CSUN has been off since Feb. 19 when it defeated the University of Toronto 11-2 and Chapman 16-7. Katia Andon-Mateos paced the Matadors with three goals in each victory while Madasonne Butler and Yuri Cowie tallied four goals apiece. The freshman tandem of Meghan Lopez and Piper McCulloch had 11 and seven saves, respectively, in the wins.
Andon-Mateos has scored 27 goals to lead the team while six others have scored double-digit goals, which include Tori Wilson (23), Helena Sandhagen (20), Kylee Jansen (19), Jennalyn Barthels (17), Butler (15) and Kaitlyn Moguel (12). In the Big West, Andon-Mateos is fifth in the league in points (47) while Wilson is sixth (46) and Barthels is tied for ninth (43). Wilson leads the Big West in steals (33) and is followed by Barthels (25) in second place. In the assist department, Barthels is second with 25 while Alessia Marquez is third (24) and Wilson is fourth (23).
In front of the cage, Lopez is ranked fifth in saves with 94 and ninth in goals-against-average at 6.55. McCulloch is also seventh in saves with 66.
CSUN and UCSD have met 23 times in water polo but Saturday marks the first Big West Conference meeting between the two programs. The Tritons have won the last six meetings in the series, dating back to the 2016 season. In 2019, UCSD handed the Matadors an 11-4 defeat at the Aztec Invitational. CSUN last defeated UCSD during the 2015 season in a match played at La Jolla (8-4).Â
The 10th-ranked Tritons are 11-5 this season with all five of their losses coming to Top 10 teams. UCSD went 2-2 at UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbus Invitational where the Tritons picked up wins over San Diego State and San Jose State. Junior Ciara Franke leads the squad with 32 goals while junior Taylor Onstott has a team-high 46 total points including 31 goals. In front of the cage, junior Bennett Bugelli has racked up 110 saves to go with an 8.00 GAA.
LIU is in its inaugural water polo season in 2020 and compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Sharks are 4-9 on the year and coming off a 1-1 showing at the Marist Invitational last week. LIU defeated Siena 9-8 but fell to Marist 16-8 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Feb. 22. Freshman Kate Hinrichs led LIU with 10 points on six goals and four assists to earn MAAC Rookie of the Week honors this past week.
