CSUN Holds on for Five-Set Win at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The CSUN Women's Volleyball team picked up its second win in its past three road matches as the Matadors held on to defeat UC Davis in five sets Thursday at the University Credit Union Center.
With the win, CSUN improves to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the Big West Conference, while the Aggies drop to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Three Matadors reached double figures in kills led by Nicole Nevarez and Taylor Orshoff who had 14 kills apiece. Nevarez hit .333 on 30 swings to go with nine digs while Orshoff hit .294 on a match-high 34 attempts to go with three blocks.
• Senior Seyvion Waggoner had her best match of the season, putting down a season-high 13 kills on 22 swings to hit .409 which led all CSUN hitters. Fellow senior Lexi McLeod chipped in seven kills (.316), 10 digs and a pair of aces.
• Setters Carisa Barron and Madison Klungel combined for 43 assists and 11 digs in leading the Matador hitters to a .276 hitting clip, their second-best hitting effort of the season. Senior libero Makayla Bradford led all players in the match with 15 digs to go with four assists.
• In addition to out-hitting the Aggies .276 to .237, CSUN had 9.0 blocks to UCD's 6.0 and the Matadors had a slight 48-47 edge in team digs.
• Amara Aimufua put down a match-high 16 kills on .364 hitting to lead UC Davis.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"The team fought hard throughout the entire match. They battled for each and every point and we did a great job eliminating our errors. We had three hitters with double-digit kills for the first time this season. I am really proud of the way they competed and got a win to open the road trip."
FIRST SET
With the Matadors holding a 10-9 lead in the opening set, the host Aggies scored four straight to open up a 13-10 cushion. An Orshoff kill on the ensuing point was followed by a solo stuff by Lauryn Anderson and three consecutive UCD hitting errors which CSUN a 15-13 lead. Three straight Aggie points of a timeout put the hosts back in front 16-15 before the Matadors engineered a 6-2 run to open up a 21-18 advantage. Two more CSUN points out of an Aggie timeout extended the lead to 23-18 and the Matadors cruised to the 25-19 win.
SECOND SET
The Aggies turned the tables in set two, as they won going away 25-19. With the score tied at 8-8, UC Davis claimed 10 of the next 13 points to open up a sizable 18-11 lead. The Matadors battled back to within four at 19-15 before another 4-0 CSUN run trimmed the lead to 21-19 following an Anderson/Waggoner block. The Matadors however would not score again as the Aggies took the final four points in the 25-19 win.
THIRD SET
Undeterred, CSUN jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third and would not trail in the set. UC Davis managed to knot the score at 7-7 before the Matadors pushed the lead to three (12-9) following an Aggie hitting error. CSUN would maintain a three-point lead at 18-15 when a Waggoner kill and a Barron ace highlighted a 3-1 Matador run as the lead swelled to 21-16. UCD would close to within two (21-19) forcing a CSUN timeout before the Matadors claimed four of the final five points to take the set 25-20.
FOURTH SET
With CSUN holding an 8-7 lead, the Aggies went on an 8-3 run to erase the lead while opening up a 15-10 cushion. UC Davis would lead by as many as seven (19-12) when the Matadors put together a late 6-3 run to pull within 22-18 following a McLeod kill. But the Aggies outscored CSUN 3-2 down the stretch to seal the 25-20 win.
FIFTH SET
Neither team led by more than one point until the Aggies scored two straight points to snap an 8-8 tie. Following a CSUN timeout, a McLeod kill and an Aggie hitting error tied the score for the ninth time. Following a UC Davis kill, Nevarez answered with consecutive kills giving the Matadors a 13-12 lead while forcing an Aggie timeout. A UC Davis kill out of the timeout tied for the score for the final time when Orshoff and Nevarez connected for back-to-back kills giving CSUN the 15-13 win.

The Matadors play the second match of their three-match road trip this Saturday (Oct. 16) as CSUN travels to Riverside to meet the Highlanders at 5 p.m.
