COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"It feels great to win a match in three sets. Our passing and attacking was good tonight and we kept our errors low, which put pressure on Riverside. We are playing much better volleyball at this point of the season."
FIRST SET
After leading by as many as three (9-6) in the early stages of the match, a 4-1 CSUN run - capped by an Anderson-Seyvion Waggoner block - opened up a 13-9 lead. The Highlanders would trim the lead to two on a pair of occasions, the last at 15-13, when an Anderson kill fueled a 4-0 Matador run which extended the lead to 19-13. An ensuing 5-1 run by UCR again cut the lead to two (20-18) before the Highlanders pulled within one at 21-20 when Klungel was whistled for a setting error. Two straight CSUN points pushed the lead back to three before UCR answered with a 3-0 run to knot the score. McLeod's kill set the Matadors up with set point at 24-23 before Waggoner put away a kill as the Highlanders were whistled for a net error, sending CSUN to the 25-23 win.
SECOND SET
The Matadors led by as many as four points in the second set before a 6-1 UCR run erased a 14-10 CSUN advantage. After a Nevarez kill tied the score at 16-16, the teams traded sideouts until McLeod's ace put the Matadors up by two at 21-19. The Highlanders then used a 3-1 run to knot the score at 22-22. The set would be tied five more times down the stretch, the last at 27-27, when a UCR service error followed by a Nevarez kill gave CSUN the 29-27 win.
THIRD SET
The Matadors led by three for much of the early portion of the final set. Holding a 13-10 lead, CSUN went on a 4-2 run to open up a 17-12 cushion following a co-block from McLeod and Abigail Macias. UCR then scored three straight to cut the lead to two (17-15) before the Matadors answered with a 3-0 run of their own, capped by a Bradford ace, to lead 20-15. The Highlanders would get as close as three down the stretch before CSUN closed out the 25-20 on an Orshoff kill.
