STOCKTON, Calif. - Sophomore Eirik Thomassen fired an opening-round 68 and is in the top-20 while the CSUN Men's Golf team is tied for ninth after 18 holes of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Thursday at Stockton Golf & Country Club.
The Matadors posted a team round of 287 on Thursday which left them tied with Dixie State for ninth-place in the 15-team field. Washington State shot a team round of 268 to carry a two-shot lead over BYU (270) into the second round on Friday. Two players, Pono Yanagi of Washington State and Kristian Bressum of St. Mary's, fired an opening-round six-under 65 to lead the individual competition by one shot.
Thomassen began the day on the 10th tee and had two birdies and a bogey over his first seven holes to get to one-under. A bogey at No. 17 dropped him to even-par heading to his final nine holes. An eagle three at the Par 5 2nd hole moved him to two-under where he remained for the next four holes. A bogey at No. 7 dropped him to one-under before he closed with a pair of birdies to get to three-under 68.Â
CSUNÂ SCORES
"Eirik made an amazing bogey at No. 7 and closed with a pair of birdies which was a great finish for him. Overall, we struggled through some bad holes as a team but still shot three-over so I was pleased with that. We just didn't get that fourth score today, but It was just one round and we'll look to play better tomorrow."
CSUN will be paired with Temple and UC Irvine for the second round which will tee off Friday morning at 9:15Â a.m.
