CSUN Tops UC Davis, 3-1 for Second Straight Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Sophomore Taylor Orshoff put down a career-high 18 kills to lead the CSUN Women's Volleyball team past UC Davis, 3-1 in a Big West Conference match Saturday evening at The Matadome.
After defeating UC Riverside on Friday, the Matadors sweep their second straight season series and improve to 7-21 overall and 6-12 in the Big West Conference. The loss drops the Aggies to 11-18 overall and 7-11 in Big West Conference play
KEY STATISTICS
• Orshoff led all hitters in the match with 18 kills, one more than her previous career-high. She hit .256 on 39 swings while adding five blocks and three digs.
• Senior Nicole Nevarez added 14 kills, hitting a season-high .387 on 31 swings. Nevarez completed her second consecutive double-double (eighth of the season) by adding 10 digs along with three blocks.
• Senior Seyvion Waggoner chipped in 10 kills (.250) while redshirt freshman Taylor Hunter added nine kills while hitting .533 on 15 attacks.
• Setter Carisa Barron posted 29 assists and five digs while Madison Klungel handed out 17 assists to go with three digs and one ace. Senior Lexi McLeod had a match-high 15 digs while fellow senior Makayla Bradford matched Nevarez with 10.
• CSUN hit a season-high .299 with 60 kills and 20 errors on 134 attempts while out-blocking UC Davis 9.0 to 6.0.
• Amara Aimufua finished with a team-high 17 kills to lead UC Davis which .287 (61-22-136).

"We knew this was going to be a battle tonight. I was really happy with how hard the players competed for each point. We attacked very well and played with a lot of heart. It's great to get back-to-back wins."
FIRST SET
The Matadors held an early four-point lead (10-6) following a Waggoner kill. An ensuing 7-1 run by the Aggies put UC Davis in front 13-11 after Aimufua served on of her two aces. The Aggies would open up a three-point cushion at 18-15 forcing CSUN into a timeout. Five straight points by the Matadors erased the Aggie lead after a co-block from Orshoff and Hunter put CSUN in front to stay. Leading 24-20 after a Nevarez ace, UC Davis saved two set points before an Aggie attack error sent CSUN to the 25-22 win.
SECOND SET
UC Davis opened the second set by outscoring the Matadors 10-4. CSUN climbed back to within 14-12 following an 8-2 run which was capped by an Aggie hitting error. UC Davis extended the lead back to five at 19-14 and still led by by five (22-17) when the Matadors mounted a 7-2 run to knot the score at 24-24. A kill from Nevarez followed by another UCD hitting error completed the Matador comeback, 26-24.
THIRD SET
Looking for it's first home sweep of the season, CSUN hit .368 but the Aggies connected at a .412 clip to pull out a 28-26 win. After trailing by as many as four points (14-10), the Matadors rallied late to knot the score at 23-23 following a Hunter kill. The score was tied at 24-24, 25-25 and again at 26-26 when the Aggies used a pair of kills to force a fourth set.
FOURTH SET
Neither team led by more than two points until consecutive aces from Bradford forced a UC Davis timeout at 11-7. The Matadors pushed the lead to four (20-16) when a McLeod/Abigail Macias block forced the final Aggie timeout. Holding a 23-19 lead, CSUN withstood a late UCD rally to claimed a 25-23 win and its second straight 3-1 win.

The Matadors wrap up a three-match homestand Tuesday, hosting UC Santa Barbara in their 2021 home finale at 7 p.m.
