COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"I thought our siding-out was very consistent throughout the match. We let up on our serving in the third set and Riverside took advantage of that. We regrouped and served much better in the fourth set and took control of the match. Overall, I was happy with the win."
FIRST SET
The Matadors opened up a three-point lead at 10-7 following the third of three straight Orshoff kills. After a CSUN service error cut the lead to 10-8, the Matadors scored six straight points to lead by as many as eight at 16-8. A Klungel ace gave CSUN its largest lead at 20-10 and the Matadors held off a late UCR run to post a 25-18 win.
SECOND SET
A Seyvion Waggoner kill opened up an early 11-7 Matador lead forcing a Highlander timeout. Another Orshoff kill pushed the lead to six at 15-9 before the visitors mounted a rally to pull within 19-18 after a 9-4 run. A Hunter kill ended the run and CSUN led until two straight UCR points snapped a 21-21 tie. Trailing 23-21, the Matadors got a kill from McLeod and a Highlander hitting error to knot the score at 23-23. The score remained tied at 24-all when a solo block by Anderson was followed by a Nevarez kill giving CSUN the 26-24 win.
THIRD SET
After hitting .114 and .146 over the first two sets, UCR hit .471 in claiming the third set 27-25. After a Waggoner ace pulled CSUN even at 23-23 in the latter stages, the two teams battled through two more ties before An Osuji kill and a CSUN setting error sent UCR to the 27-25 win.
FOURTH SET
Leading by one at 12-11, the Matadors engineered a 6-2 run to lead 18-13 following a UCR hitting error. A kill by Anderson maintained a five-point lead at 20-15 before another Osuji kill trimmed the lead to three at 21-18. But Orshoff would connect for a pair of kills over the final seven points of the match as CSUN claimed a 25-20 win and a 3-1 win.
