USC Hands CSUN a 76-51 Defeat
12/15/2021 3:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES—USC defeated CSUN 76-51 in Women's Basketball action Wednesday afternoon at the Galen Center.
FIRST HALF
The play was evenly matched throughout much of the first quarter. A pair of three-pointers by USC's Tera Reed and Desiree Mitchell in the final minute of the first quarter keyed an 18-5 spurt that ran for the next 6+ minutes and resulted in a 29-13 Women of Troy lead midway through the second period.
USC would lead by as many as 18 during the first half as the Women of Troy forced 11 turnovers which were turned into 15 points. The Matadors kept USC at bay in the final two minutes of the half as CSUN closed to 35-21 at the half when Michelle Duchemin's floater from inside paint went in at the buzzer.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors got to the free throw line in the third as CSUN drew five USC fouls in the first five minutes of the frame. USC committed eight fouls as the Matadors went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe in the period.
CSUN kept chipping away, getting the lead down to 12 on two different occasions. USC responded both times, pushing the lead back into the 14–16-point range. Jordan Sanders scored 11 of the 25 USC points during the third quarter as the Women of Troy took a 60-44 lead into the final stanza.
Meghann Henderson opened the fourth quarter with her second three-pointer of the day to make it 60-47. The Women of Troy responded with seven straight and nine of the next 10 to push the advantage into the '20s and never looked back.
THE NUMBERS
USC's height advantage resulted in the Women of Troy outrebounding the Matadors 39-28, 14-11 on the offensive glass. USC shot 47.3% (26-55) from the floor. CSUN was 30% (15-50) from the field. The Matadors made 16-of-25 free throw attempts. USC connected on 17-of-29 from the free throw line.
For the eighth time in nine games, the Matadors forced at least 15 turnovers as USC made 17 mistakes, seven in the fourth alone. CSUN made 10 steals, the sixth time in nine games that the Matadors recorded at least 10 steals in a game. The Matadors turned the ball over 21 times which resulted in 24 points.
Tess Amundsen was CSUN's leading scorer with 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Sydney Woodley scored nine points. Kayanna Spriggs posted eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sanders led the Women of Troy with 15. Rayah Marshall scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"I did not feel that we came out with the focus and tone we needed to start the game. The starters know that is a responsibility of theirs, especially when you are on the road against a Pac 12 team that had 10 days off after a loss. We knew that they had great post depth and we would need to execute and get dribble penetration to create shots for others."
"I never fault our effort and our defensive intensity picked up in the second half, but we must learn to work smarter and understand how to execute and who needs to touch the ball each time down the court. 25 free throw attempts will help us win games down the road, especially playing only one player (Kayanna Spriggs) over 6-1. Spriggs' ability to attack is a bright spot as we work to get a more balanced inside-out attack. With finals underway and nine freshmen, it's a unique balance of keeping them focused and sharp on the court but understanding the balance and workload of being a student-athlete."
