RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN defeated UC Riverside for the 18th consecutive time (dating back to 2004) as the Matadors handed the Highlanders a 4-1 loss in Big West women's tennis action Sunday afternoon.
Doubles began with the Highlanders' No. 1 team of Tia Elpusan and Hanh Pham defeating Victoria Santibañez Luna and Ana Fraile Toboso 6-0. The Matadors bounced back, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 doubles by Sasha Turchak and Magdalena Hedrzak and No. 3 doubles by Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian.
Turchak opened singles play by defeating Natalie Shamma at No. 3 in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Dorian defeated Sofia Lazzaroni 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. Elpusan got UC Riverside on the board when she defeated Fraile Toboso 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1. Hedrzak clinched the dual for the Matadors when she defeated Mahli Silpachai 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.
"This was a strong effort from the depth of our team," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Jenna, Sasha, and Magdalena have been great additions to the team. We are batting through the challenges of a very short season with a determination that we are proud of. We are hoping to get healthy soon."
The win marked the 40th for CSUN in the all-time series against UCR (0-6, 0-5 Big West) in 41 tries since the teams began to play each other in 1982.
CSUN (6-3, 3-2 Big West) returns to the Matador Tennis Complex Friday when CSUN host UC Santa Barbara (7-3) The Gauchos currently lead the conference dual standings with a 6-0 record. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
